    Dia de los Muertos is one of my favorite day of the year. We celebrate the lives of those that have moved on and relearn an appreciation for the ones we have around us. Every culture has their own tradition for honoring their ancestors, celebrating their lives and sharing a meal with them again once a year, when they make their way back to us to see how things are going. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate these kind of traditions because they're all as unique as the individuals we are honoring. That's why it's beautiful to see more and more spaces in L.A. start their own celebrations in their own way. All events are listed by date and have a link to an event page. Call ahead or double check the event page for any last minute updates or changes. More events should be popping up as the day of nears, so stay posted for updates or if you have a show you know of, let us know in the comments. -- Erick

    Self Help Graphics Day of the Dead: Community Art Workshops


    Saturday 10/22 and 10/29 From Noon to 3 p.m. Free
    All materials and teachers are provided by Self Help Graphics & Art
    Enjoy a Saturday afternoon of fun and tradition with new friends and old ones too. Wear clothes that you won't mind getting dirty. Participants can drop in any time between noon and 3 p.m. since the workshops are ongoing. Participants for the paper mache masks, procession puppets and calaveras are encouraged to arrive by 12 or 1 to complete their projects.
    Art Workshops Include:

    Flores de Papel/Paper Flower Making led by Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna Esparza
    Experience the tradition of creating handcrafted paper flowers for use in home altars and community ceremonies.  Techniques for creating small and big flowers o multiple colors will be taught and reviewed.  Participants can take some flowers home and leave some at SHG to be used throughout the gallery space during the Day of the Dead season.  Some flowers will also be used for the community altar at the Noche de Ofrenda on October 29.  For all ages and experiences.

    Papel Picado/Mexican Cut Paper with Maricela Sosa and Olivia Y. Armas
    Learn the basics of papel picado using simple cutting techniques and templates to create Day of the Dead designs to be used as panels and banners.  Participants can take some of their creations home and choose to leave some for SHG gallery space and community altar.   For all ages and experiences.  Use of templates recommended for youth and young adults.  Familias encouraged to come together and join us in creating a beautiful collaborative project.

    Dia de los Muertos Mascara Decorating with Becky Cortez
    Join crafter, Becky Cortez, to decorate a one-dimensional, calaca mascara (mask) created by a SHG artist and printed on card stock.  This workshop is challenging for all due to the different materials used for personalizing your mascara.  Each beautiful creation is uniquely yours!  Participants are encouraged and invited to wear the mascara to SHG Dia de los Muertos procession on November 2nd.  Some mascaras may also be used for our gallery space and community altar.  For all ages and experiences.  Familias encouraged to create together!

    Paper Mache Mask with Dewey Tafoya
    Create your very own calavera paper mache mask with artist Dewey Tafoya.  Participants will use plaster forms to to create a classic paper mache calaca mask.  Making these masks is a two-part process, so be sure to make time in your shcedule for 2 Saturdays.  Create your mask on one Saturday, let it dry for a week, then come back the following Saturday to decorate!  Younger children will need help with mask making -- a trusted adult is encouraged to accompany and assist children.

    Paper Mache Procession Calaveras and Calacas with William Acedo 
    Collaborate with community and family to create SHG's classic oversize paper mache calaveras, calacas and puppets to be used in the procession for November 2nd.  Participants are encouraged to attend as many Saturdays as possible in order to build their artwork, allow it to dry for a week and then decorate it with paint and different materials.  For all ages and experiences.  Families and groups are encouraged to come and create their own unique, traditional artwork for SHG historic procession.

    Hollywood Forever 2011 Day of the Dead

    Hollywood Forever graciously and enthusiastically welcome the city of Angels and beyond to embrace, honor and celebrate the memory of the departed as we commemorate the 12th annual Dia de Los Muertos at your historical Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Hollywood Forever, the resting place of Hollywood's immortals requests your presence for the Nations largest and most authentic Day of the Dead celebration. Witness this colorful ancient indigenous based Mexican ceremony as we welcome our guests to celebrate life and ancient traditions fused with modern culture.Join us as we illuminate the evening sky with the various mosaic flavors of life, remembering and paying homage to the dearly departed as we joyfully walk hand in hand with the recollections of the spirits we pay tribute to. Allow the ingrained history of this ancient tradition to capture the heart of the newly curious, sustain the hopes of the returning and quench the thirst of the surrounding souls.
    The 2011 Dia de Los Muertos will feature Astrid Hadad and special performance by international musical icon Ruben Albarran, lead singer of CafÈ Tacvba. Astrid Hadad best known as "La Tequilera" presenting for the first time in California the show "Sobre una Tumba una Rumba" a two hour set in honor of †la Muerte rumbera -according to Astrid Hadad- †singing classic songs, Lampara sin Luz, Sobre una Tumba una Rumba and La Muerte Chiquita a duo with Ruben Albarran. After a great success last year Ruben Albarran (lead singer of Cafe Tacvba) is †back to Dia de Los Muertos with †Hoppo!, this time with a very intimate ensemble accompany with a sitar and guitar player from Chile, and a violinist from New York. Together they will recite contemporary pieces from Latin American composers plus a posthumous homage to legendary singer Rockdrigo Gonzalez known as "The Nopal Prophet".
    We will observe the millenary custom with altar settings, a procession, incense, food and rituals, from cultures around the world. a diversity of world re owned artists. Children will enjoy and learn more about this millenary tradition by storytelling, the making of the altars, face painting, dancing, and even playing African marimbas are among the activities early birds will get to enjoy. Hollywood Forever is the only cemetery in the country which opens its gates to commemorate this annual tradition.

    Sunset Strip Day of the Dead Strip Crawl

    Black Star’s Day of the Dead Strip Crawl starts at The World Famous Comedy Store at 7:00pm on October 22. This event is free & 21+

    Black Star’s Day of the Dead Strip Crawl is raising spirits on The Sunset Strip and we want you to be there. This Strip Crawl will include Day of the Dead themed shenanigans as we crawl from The World Famous Comedy Store to The Roxy Theatre & hit all of our favorite spots in between. There will be games, contests, tarot card readers, pumpkins, Day of the Dead face painting, a Mariachi band or two, and so much more. Food & drink specials go without saying on top of all the awesome swag we’ll be handing out all night. Stops include The Viper Room, Red Rock, Isla, The Comedy Store, The Roxy & more. Black Star Beer will be on special throughout the night. Their vintage Airstream equipped with a digital photo booth will be parked along the strip, so hop in and document the evening’s festivities.

    2nd Annual Rose Hills Dia de los Muertos Cultural Festival & Marketplace

    Rose Hills Memorial Park, the largest cemetery in the world, will open its gates on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm to celebrate the 2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos Cultural Festival & Marketplace. Together, we will embrace the rich culture and mystic beauty of the tradition of bringing to life the memories of loved ones with dignity and respect. We will share these memories through the creation of beautifully crafted altars and invite you to participate in a day that pays tribute to this ancient festivity. Join the celebration with a tapestry of color, art, music and flavor at the majestic hilltop with breathtaking views and home to SkyRose Chapel, courtyard and surrounding garden.

    Floricanto Day of the Dead 
    Danza Floricanto/USA's Dia de Los Muertos Celebration takes its inspiration from the very traditional Day of the Dead activities in Mexico-altar offerings of favorite foods and flowers honoring our dead, processions to the grave sites, songs, candles. sugar skulls, skeleton dioramas, and paper cuttings-and gives it a contemporary flavor.designed to entertain and delight the whole family. Choreographed by Gema Sandoval, this hour long program is a series of dance theater vignettes orchestrated by "La Catrina," the skeleton like figure created by turn of the century Mexican graphic artist, José Guadalupe Posada. These snapshots of life-a mother who lost her child, star crossed lovers, a bull fighter, field hands, among others-become an affirmation of life through dance. Floricanto's program combines traditional folklore with contemporary themes and humor in order to appeal to the whole family. Additionally, in the lobby of the theater, we set up a community altar, where audience members are invited to include the name of their departed loved ones as they come in to watch the performance and in this way become part of the event.

    Day of the Dead is a time of celebration and remembrance. The theme of this year's show is Revival in celebration of SHG's new home in Boyle Heights. The iconography and aesthetics unique to this holiday have always been an inspiration in my own work as well. I am honored to be curating the 2011 Day of the Dead show.

    Join us for our 2nd Annual Dia de los Muertos celebration to honor, remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed on and to share in the cultural roots of this indigenous holiday.
    Sunday October 30, 2011 11am - 8pm
    We will have performers all day long, including singers, musicians, theatre and choreography. Simultaneously, we will have an Art Exhibition distributed along the walls, inside the Mercado la Paloma. Also, the outside gazebo space will be transformed into an immense altar, commemorating the spiritual leaders of peace, love and good harmony. Moreover, we will include a community altar for people who would like to participate with their offerings: photos, personal items, poetry, etc. Lastly, we will have live art demonstrations to include face painting, leather work, traditional weaving and ceramics.

    Self Help Graphics and Art Day of the Dead: Revival 

    Self Help Graphics & Art was the first organization in the country to create a free public celebration of Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead through the leadership and initiation of local artists in 1973. As in the different Mexican regions, Self Help Graphics’ celebration is distinct to the East Side artistic community it represents. Every year, on November 2nd, Self Help Graphics’ yearly day of remembering that life is a dream from which, one day we will awaken, celebrates our beloved who are no longer with us.     Forest Lawn Cypress - Forecourt of the Paradise Mosaic

    Forest Lawn will host its first annual Dia de los Muertos celebration at Forest Lawn-Cypress. On Wednesday, November 2, the Dia de los Muertos Mass will take place from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., followed by refreshments. The mass will feature an altar designed by artists Ofelia Esparza, and her daughter, Rosanna Ahrens. Esparza is widely known for her Dia de los Muertos altar installations and her work has been shown at several prominent national and international museums and galleries, inlcuding the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Mexican Fine Art Museum of Chicago, and the Glasgow Print Studio in Glasgow, Scotland. The celebration will take place in front of the forecourt of the Paradise Mosaic. Guests are welcome to bring photos to display at the altar.     Forest Lawn Covina Hills - Forecourt of the Life of Christ Mosaic

    Forest Lawn will host its second annual Dia de los Muertos celebration at Forest Lawn-Covina Hills. On Wednessday, November 2, the Dia de los Muertos Mass will take place from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

    The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a children's pre-show segment featuring popular Christian pop singer, Andrea Andrea, followed by a musical performance by charismatic gospel singer Sandy Caldera at 5:30 p.m.

    La Muerte Vive Rock Opera

    1st Annual Holiday Cabaret Show, Sponsored in Part by Corralejo Tequila, Inspired by the Mexican traditions of Dia de los Muertos  (Day of the Dead)  featuring the Nations largest collection of Giant Judas  (Paper Mache Puppets ) created by artist Tony Dominguez,  in a unique event of Cabaret (Teatro, Art, Music and Dance), hosted by Santos de Los Angeles at the Historic Million Dollar Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. The “Rock Opera Cabaret” will feature performances by El Gavachillo (Wil-Dog of Ozomatli) y su Banda, The Wiseguys 18 peice Big Band Machine and will feature a Special Performance by Miss Ruby Champagne.La Muerte Vive ™, conceived by Tony Dominguez in 2007, is a celebration of life inspired by the Mexican traditions of Día de los Muertos .This is Dominguez’ debut theatrical production; coming on the heels of a successful nation wide tour.

    Dominguez Paper Mache Art was the featured artist In the Miracle on the Hudson Reunion (U.S. Airways flight 1549) party in New York City. In the past, over 100,000 people attended  Dominguez’ festivals and holiday celebrations (Festival De la Gente, Las Posadas.) Dominguez is a 2010 Biz Bash award finalist. La Muerte Vive (LMV) is an independent production, written and directed by Tony Dominguez. LMV is inspired by the music of Santos De Los Angeles. Art direction will be designed and created by Dominguez, consisting of a giant, three dimensional paper mache altar as the stage, a perfect setting to combine the elements of Paper Mache, Theatre, Live Music and Dance.  Animated art (piñatas and puppets) will come to life contributing to the performance.

     The play will be narrated with music composed by Los Angeles based  artist - Santos De Los Angeles (debuted on American Latino show on ABC.)  Santos will take you on a journey exploring the significance of the festive Mexican Holiday Traditions of Dia De Los Muertos s.  Using the famed style of Mariachi Tenors, Santos will guide the audience to the very heart and soul of these cultural traditions, through a night of Teatro, Cabaret, Spoken Word and Story Telling, culminating in a full musical Latin Rock Concert.  With special community performances and displays that feature an interactive art display, with works by Tony Dominguez and nationally acclaimed muralist Ricardo Estrada. The  Performances and Displays will be open to the public daily. The event’s VIP After Party will be hosted by Raul Diablito Martinez and will take place in Downtown Los Angeles. The partnership between The Million Dollar Theatre enables the cast to perform a larger more spectacular event, in a historical theatre setting; the launching point of a U.S tour in 2011.

    Day of the Dead At SPARC 

    SPARC presents a traditional “Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead” ceremony to honor the dearly beloved/departed with the annual ritual of Calling the Spirits to come to their celebration. The traditional community ceremony will start at 6:30 P.M. and is open to the community. UCLA instructor and SPARC’s Artist in Residence, Martha Ramirez-Oropeza and UCLA’s  César E. Chávez Chicana/o Studies Department students will guide the ceremony. After an intermission, guests will enjoy an ensemble featuring two traditional performers, Ruben Izquierdo and Alfredo Lopez who will be performing Mexican, Cuban, and South American music.

    Ruben Izquierdo, studied classical guitar at the University of Mexico City and graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a composer, arranger and guitarist who is currently working on many projects which include writing the musical score for the documentary “2500 plus one sculptures”, Alejandro Santiago, Mexican artist and collaborates as a core member for SPARC’s Planet Siqueiros Event Series in Venice, California. Ruben’s compositions were featured in both the Guitar Player’s “Spotlight” section and “Musico Pro” Magazine where he received favorable reviews.

    Alfredo Lopez is an extraordinary musician/vocalist who has mastered more than twenty styles of Latino American traditional music. He is the director of Mexico’s well-known musical group Quetzalcoatl. His performances include solo concerts at venues such as the Smithsonian Institute, Royce Hall at UCLA and more. Alfredo has composed songs which have been included in films such as “The Net” (Sandra Bullock), “American Me” produced and directed by Edward James Olmos, “The Maldonado Miracle”, produced and directed by Salma Hayek.

    Traditional Pan-Dulce (Mexican sweet bread) and Mexican hot chocolate will be served; donations to benefit Save LA Murals. $10 suggested donation at the door.

    Join for an amazing three day event celebrating the Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos with "Evita Freaks" band performing outside in our patio to their unique sounds and original music. In our gallery we will have a group Exibitiion with: Daniel Galindo and his mystical oil paintings, David Renteria "The Master Engraver" will show his beautiful engraving on metaland we want to add that he is in much demand and are honored that he chose us to exhibit his one of a kind Engravings

    This is a rare treat for anyone and I understand that he will be signing autographs! And Elisa Esqueda and her unique style of the lively calacas! Her work is fun and unusual in that she paints in the tradional day of the dead people, but they are dressed in modern outfits and they are so lively! How is that possible when they are dead? Well we will have to see.

    Closing the show we have a spececial live performance created and directed by Julio Villegas. A historical journey telling the tradional story of Dia de Los Muertos performed by an excellent cast.The creation for this Day of the Dead is an original work, both magical and mysterious... The live performance also includes poetry and is sure to leave you wanting to come back the follwoing day. And we want you to! The Bilingual Actors Repertory Theatre continues to consistantly produce quality bilingual theatre.

    Doors open at 5:00 pm. You can stroll through our beautiful grounds and listien to the sournds of "Evita Freaks" who begin playing at 6pm. Meet the Vendors all selling unuique items: Ernesto Vasquez and Solidarity Ink. Also vending will be the family of Eisa Esqueda one of the three featured artist at our gourp exhibit. Her famiily has for generations passed down the skill and receipe for the sugar skulls tradional to the day of the dead. They will also sell hand crafted jewlery made from beer caps! I want to see those! I will also have a spot on the vending side. My partner and I will be selling high end vintage and antique Taxco, Mexico Jewlery and also costume jewlery from as early as the 1920's! This extraordinary event closes our season until 2012 when we reopen.

    Festival del Dia de los Muertos 

    Noche de Altares in Santa Ana

     

    For the 9th year in a row, Centro Cultural de México is organizing Noche de Altares (A Night of Altars). This year Centro is proud to present this free event in partnership with Calacas Inc., a Santa Ana business that promotes art and culture through products made by indigenous people living in México and local artisans living in Southern California. Noche de Altares is a community-based event celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), one of México’s oldest, indigenous festivals. Organized by volunteers, the purpose of the celebration is to honor the ancient traditions of the festival and bring community members together through art, culture, and compassion.

    For one night, families, students, community organizations, activists, artists, and businesses are invited to build an altar in memory of a deceased loved one or to bring awareness to a social issue. Participants in past events have dedicated their altars to their parents, siblings, and friends. They have also dedicated their altars to soldiers who have died in war, women who have made a significant impact in history, and people who have died of AIDS, cancer, and diabetes. In addition to viewing beautifully created altars, attendees will be entertained by cultural performances and live music. Children can get their face painted and participate in free, art workshops. Local artists will be selling their wares and local restaurants will be selling their most delicious dishes. Finally, attendees will have a photo opportunities with La Catrina, the modern-day icon of Día de los Muertos created by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada.

    There will be wine, mexican hors d'ouvres, and fun people to socialize with.
    This year we will also have a wall dedicated to Narbonne High school AP art students. This is to support the arts in high school, and motivate students to maintain creative and open minds.

    Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide

    Mexicans and Central Americans celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, a day of remembrance for family members and friends who have passed. The Armenian-Greek-Assyrians who perished by Ottoman government ethnic cleansing orders in 1959 are also remembered and celebrated by modern-day Armenians. Armenian Genocide graves do not exist. Armenians were deported to the desert, which saved the Ottoman government the expense of ammunition and mass grave clean-up.

    Scientific analysis of post-traumatic stress disorder and subsequent recovery requires recognizing the trauma, confronting the source, and supporting the grieving process to allow healing to happen. Accordingly, “Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide” installation consists of three parts.

    Sophia Gasparian’s childlike aesthetic juxtaposed with social satire suggest the final process of healing from the denied death trauma. Survival of the “unwanted” and the ability of the oppressed to contribute to the newly adopted culture are signs of social triumph over historic evil. “Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide” includes Gasparian’s collaborations with Los Angeles based fellow artists Lydia Emily, Terri Berman, Daisuke Okamoto, Douglas Alvarez, Farzad Kohan and LeNic, addressing Native American Genocide, the current AIDS epidemic, terrorist feared world and the declaration of Jihad (holy war) on ignorance and institutionalized oppression. Harmonic collaborations amongst these artists, the gallery and the audience are a form of a non-violent discourse.

    Zareh addresses the historical events of the 1915 Armenian Genocide while Kaloust Guedel’s masterfully executed and emotionally charged work provides the immediate and primal confrontation.

    Arpiné Shakhbandaryan maps world genocide sites with a focus on the Armenian Genocide.
