Interview with Gypsy Mamba

10:52 AM PST on January 27, 2017

Gypsy Mamba first caught our attention on Sound Cloud, where he posted both bass-heavy bangers, and unique loops and beats that managed to take older sounds and perfectly match them with up to the moment beats. His debut full length album, Magnetic Syndrome, released on Alpha Pup, arrives today on vinyl and streaming services. We caught up with the Mamba at his home studio in the 909 for this Q&A about his music, his life, and his favorite taco spot...

What's your favorite taco?
A spot in Anaheim called "Taqueria De Anda".

What brought you to Southern California, what keeps you here?
i was born here in Santa Ana CA i lived in Orange county till i was 15 then moved out to Riverside been a so cal head my whole life till i die =D

Can you describe the process you went through to create Magnetic Syndromes?
So the last year making music was really my only way of therapeutic relief i let a lot of things get to me in life but i try to not speak on them as often as i should and it messes with me mentally. the best way to counter that for me has been to sit at my desk and focus on creating so everything i would create for this album had to do with a certain time and emotion i was going through. at first it wasn’t the idea to make an album out of it, these were tracks that i used to play to remind myself of how much better i felt while i was dealing with whatever shit was going on at the time. after a while i started saying "man I’m attracted to these damn feels (syndromes) like a magnet or some shit” when i say feels i mean like being pissed off or stressed out or depressed or anything really that i deal with on the daily that spreads a negative cloud over my head, so to make a long story short the process making this album was converting negative thoughts into positive creations.

For people who don't know much about it, what's Rancho Coucamounga like?
It's kinda boring, quiet, lame (lel)….kinda place you raise kids in…..i love it been living here for 5 years now shouts out 909!

What's the most beautiful thing in the world?
My son of course. he saved my life.

This album balances some absolute monster tracks like Choker, with mind-bending ambient pieces. How do those two poles relate to your own life?
Jekyll n Hyde shit……charged up over “feels” or down and out over stress the music portrays that.i hate to say it cause it sounds like “wah wah wah” but yeah its either that or be mad all day. Just put it in the music.

Do you have a lucky number?
4-3-8-1-14 those are always good.

What kind of parties do you like to play at? What would be your dream gig?
idk really a dream gig is anywhere that people come up after and tell me they had an experience and enjoyed the music. a receptive crowd is a good night to me. i like parties that are established as iconic and pioneering in new music. its always good to get a good inspiring act come on you haven’t heard of yet.

If you could design your own theme park, what would it have?
So, considering that by the time i would even think i would have the capital to create such a thing it would be about 2070 and by then the entire world will be virtual reality simulation of real life and i would create all sorts of fake realities people can just spend eternity in while i take their money and fuel it toward human planting facilities where i will create a race of humans born into a matrix where reality isn’t what it seems then some guy will pop up asking you if you wanna take the red pill or the blue pill and at that point its up to you to decide if you want to be awaken and become NEO or just fade away back into the false reality gypsy mamba created for you……=D

When and where are you most happy?
I'm most happy when in my home making stuff (art music..) watching vids talking to the homies that come over my wife my son is all there everything i love and hold dear is there. also being around nature that is pretty awe inspiring at times.

Got any shoutouts?
Shouts out to Rootnote Collective Assorted Flavors Alpha Pup Records Blvnt Records Play it Louder Alaya my home boy VINNY and shouts out to Brick to Ya Face they the homies! kek.
