Celebrating its 26th season, photo l.a. holds the title as one of LA's longest running art fairs, and has become a true global forum. Each year, the event draws the attention and aspirations of more than 10,000 attendees, and showcases a fascinating range of past, present and future photography. Photo l.a. will take place at The Reef, located in the historic LA Mart building in Downtown Los Angeles, January 12-15, 2017. The opening Gala will take place on Thursday January 12th, and will honor the influential curator Weston Naef of the Getty Museum's Department of Photographs, who founded the Getty's world renowned collection and has authored numerous books on the history and art of photography. Having attended Photo L.A. in the past, we again look forward to checking out a wide array of work collected and presented by some of the world's most prestigious galleries and collectors. The following are a few selections from the show that caught our eye...
One of the highlights of this year’s photo l.a. are numerous curated installations of photography. Monroe Gallery showcases LIFE magazine photographer Grey Villet's intimate images of interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving, whose marriage in segregated Virginia in the 1960s is chronicled in Jeff Nichols’ newly-released feature film, Loving.
Another showcase we're looking forward to is "All Kill No Fill" curated by Boyz Beiber and Bonny Taylor, as this exhibit will underline the amazing world of skateboarding photography. Often overlooked, this display of work will show you the inside of a skate photographer's mind as they dive into the darkness of the streets. Sometimes running from the law or jumping fences to reach an empty pool, skate photography captures a diverse subculture of art and sports. Photographers on display include Arto Saari, Atiba Jefferson, Jerry Hsu, Anthony Acosta, Dennis McGrath and Mike O'Mealy.
Last but not least we're extremely excited to see our friend Raymundo T. Reynoso aka EYEONE will be releasing a deluxe book with Zero Plus Publishing. From zines to fine art books this marks a momentous event for Eyeone, whose work has contributed to the fabrication of the ever-growing Los Angeles Street Art scene. "Eyeone" was put together by some of the world's best, with printing by Typecraft and book binding by Roswell. Each cover has been hand-embellished and silk screened on 5mm heavyweight board to perfect the book. We heard Eyeone himself may be at the Zero Plus Publishing booth signing copies
