Preview: Albert Reyes “The World We Live In” ~ Opens October 7 at Superchief

11:59 AM PDT on October 6, 2017

[dropcap size=big]T[/dropcap]he dark mind of Albert Reyes has entranced and terrified the Los Angeles art scene for the better part of the last decade. His illustrations and paintings have always been just one reflection of an artistic vision of the world as a haunted house, with horrors around the corner and the everyday transformed into the terrifying. Friends and neighbors have long known about his permanent backyard art installation / Hallowe'en maze, and for the first time art patrons can experience this without traveling to the enigmatic Reyes' El Sereno lair.

Superchief Gallery is the place to be this weekend, as the artist has built a version of his backyard horror house inside the gallery, which is also outfitted with dozens of drawings, illustrations and paintings. The maze is the focus of the show, but the work Reyes is displaying here is among the best he's produced. A new color palette renders his portraits in a cool, dispassionate greens and blues, which both chills the heart and pacifies the mind, allowing his subjects to speak directly to the viewer. These images are joined with those rendered in the jet black and deep red he is most associated with. The show features something for everyone, with small prints, large paintings, a new zine (published by your friends at L.A. Taco) and more...

Please enjoy these preview images of the installation and the work that's up in the gallery. Keep reading for more info on the show and the opening night party...

    MORE INFO

Superchief Gallery LA presents a solo exhibition of El Sereno native, Albert Reyes. We will be presenting all new multimedia work, paintings, drawings, and a full scale haunted maze installation. Albert Reyes is well known for maintaining his back yard art haunted maze installation year-round, in preparation for his annual Halloween party. We'll be taking pieces of it and constructing brand new ones for the installation for his solo show at the gallery. Two people at a time will be allowed inside this fully immersive installation.
