Solidarity with Mariachis’ Rent Strike Benefit Show ~ Nov. 17th @ The Smell

11:53 AM PST on November 17, 2017

[dropcap size=big]M[/dropcap]ariachis and their neighbors in danger of eviction from their homes at 1815 E 2nd St. are on a rent strike! The building owners, BJ Turner and Steve Goodman, jacked up rents by $800 and then refused for months to meet with the Mariachis to negotiate a reasonable rent increase. BJ Turner's speculative real estate company, Dunleer group, is luring new tenants to the area by speaking of "improvements" to the neighborhood like the galleries, coffee shops and breweries that Boyle Heights residents and their allies have been protesting. The Mariachis are at risk of losing not only their homes, but their livelihood, since they must live nearby Mariachi Plaza--the public space one block away from 1815 E 2nd St where they pick up most of their gigs. Recently, tenants convinced BJ Turner to meet with them to negotiate a reasonable rent increase, and the next day his attorneys filed papers in court requesting trial dates against the Mariachis. Now we are asking again for your support to help pay for the Mariachis and their neighbors' legal fees as they continue to fight to stay in their homes. Come join the mariachis and rent strikers in telling BJ Turner and Steve Goodman to stop the evictions and displacement of Mariachis from the Boyle Heights community! If you cannot attend, you can donate via their GoFundMe:https://www.gofundme.com/mariachisupport
