A-LO-HE. I was reading the exotic word in giant letters on the stage’s backdrop. To my ears it sounded like a warm greeting from a soft-spoken, dark-haired beauty. Wait…A-HOLE? It’s A-HOLE? As soon as the comedy of sketches TELEMONGOL started, the cast got this straight with me and the two or three other Caucasians in a predominantly Asian-American audience who may have been guilty of indulging in the same Hawaiian Airline-style fantasy. Yes it’s A-HOLE and it’s not going to be docile, polite, or even “unobtrusive” like the rest of us might assume “Japs and Chinks” to be!

Pie and Burger ~ Pasadena

When I was a child, my grandmother used to give me just a couple pieces of advice. One of them was “never go to Pasadena unless you have to”. I’ve never known why she hated on the ‘Dena, but I bet I could change her mind by taking her to Pie and Burger.

Pie and Burger Counter

Pie and Burger often gets brought up in “best burger in LA” discussions and just as often is smacked down for being overrated. It’s not over rated, it’s just a simple greasy spoon burger done the right way, and it’s served up by old-school kindly waitresses at a long lunch counter perfect for reading the paper and hiding out for awhile. If I lived near P ‘n’ B it would be my lunch-hour escape pod.

Valentin Elizalde ~ R.I.P.

From SFGate.com:

“…popular singer, Valentin Elizalde, his manager and driver were gunned down in an ambush after a concert in the border city of Reynosa in an apparent gangland hit Saturday as unabated drug-related violence continued across Mexico.

The {27-year-old singer} was killed about 20 minutes after performing at a local fair. Elizalde was a mainstay of the accordion-based norteño music variously known as Banda or grupero and also was known by the nickname “the Golden Rooster…” He also wrote lyrics honoring one of Mexico’s most notorious drug lords, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. Last year, he sang one of his narcocorridos, ballads honoring the exploits of drug dealers, to a crowd of more than 3,000 convicts at the Puente Grande prison in the central state of Jalisco.

According to media reports, two vehicles chased Elizalde’s black Suburban as he left the concert and opened fire with automatic weapons as dozens of witnesses looked on. As many as 70 bullet cartridges were found scattered on the street around Elizalde’s car. According to media reports, Elizalde was hit as many as eight times.”
