Roll Away ~ Pasadena

IMG_6385

If you saw an apartment building rolling through the streets of Pasadena this morning, you weren’t imagining things. A non-profit group began moving part of the historic Herkimer Arms Apartments from its near century-old home on Union Street to its new location on Raymond Street. When the building was slated for demolition last March, non-profit group Heritage Housing Partners purchased the building for $10 from the Fuller Theological Seminary.

The building was designed by famous architects Charles and Henry Green. More

T&T&A ~ Tony Stamolis

T&T&A-Cover

Tony Stamolis is reading our mind. The photographer from Fresno who currently lives in New York is about to release his second book, T&T&A (available at http://sumpbooks.com). It features gorgeous shots of beautiful naked women and beautiful mexican food. What’s the connection? If you have to ask… the taco lifestyle may not be for you. We caught up with Tony late last week to ask him about tacos and more…

Carne Asada, El Patio, Los Angeles, 2009_Margarita, 2009

TACO: You’re from Fresno, where else have you lived? What do you like most/least about each place?

Tony: Phoenix and Miami briefly, but NYC for the last 19 years. Fresno…I like EVERYTHING about Fresno!
NYC… most: the energy. Least: the ever growing Douche bag factor. The mall-world I ran from years ago, followed me here.

TACO: Where is your favorite taco?

Tony: The Carnitas at Don Pepe’s in Fresno. It’s in an old KFC building, across from the old Fresno Ag hardware location. Simple pleasures!

Trayvon Robinson ~ Home Grown Dodger

Trayvon Robinson is considered one of the most talented young players in the Dodgers’ farm system, but he’s unique in that he is one of the few who was born and raised in the city of LA. Trayvon grew up a Dodgers fan and is now hoping to become the next Dodger named Robinson to play for the big league club. MemoriesofKevinMalone.com has a brand new interview with Trayvon, below is an excerpt and a link:

People now have increased expectations of you, and some even want you to replace Manny Ramirez in 2011, does that kind of pressure affect you at all?

I don’t know. I mean, Manny Ramirez is a good player, and nobody should be saying that. I hope Dodgers fans wouldn’t want me to replace Manny Ramirez, but just be glad to have another Robinson in a Dodgers uniform (laughs).

I actually played with [Manny] when he came down to rehab, so that was fun, but to replace him is not something i’m thinking about (laughing). I’m just trying to get up there and play, you know? I’m just trying to get up there and be on a parade. I’m from [Los Angeles] so I want a parade.

Girl Crew Busted ~ Carson

KTLA reports that:

Sheriff’s detectives in Carson caught nine members of a girls’ tagging crew spray painting graffiti on city property.

The juveniles are all members of a crew called “FM,” and authorities say they’ve been involved in other acts of vandalism.

The city can hold the girls’ parents financially responsible for the damages, according to Det. Dan Starkey. The girls have been placed on six months of probation and will have to perform community service and take classes. They also will be required to give class presentations to other teenagers about the consequences of vandalism.

Guatemalteca Bakery Restaurant ~ Hollywood/Korea Town

The best-know location of the Guatemalteca Bakery is on a somewhat uninviting stretch of Beverly, but once you enter you can forget about the exterior and think only about the delicious food you are about to eat. The long lines and huge crowds at Beverly location are a drawback, so, I go to Guatemalteca Bakery on Santa Monica and Vermont-  a new and improved, colorful and equally delicious Guatemalan fast food just as Guatemalteca Bakery on Beverly.

Hordes of people stand in line for good 10-15 mins, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. If you don’t speak Spanish, you can simply point with your finger at ready-made dishes  cafeteria styleThey have a very easy menu to choose from antojitos and breakfast to panes (with eggs, beans, chow mein!) and meat dishes. If you feeling comfortable, try to order Guatemalan tamales-chuchitos, and my ultimate favorite - pan con huevo!

Pan Con Huevo

(Pan con huevo con todo – bread with scrambled eggs, onion, tomato, lettuce and mayo – but you can tell them no onion, etc, or add avocado, yum)

Pan con frijoles

(Pan con Frijol – ultimate chaep eat only $ 1.50)

You can also try boiled egg con salsa or platanos con crema y frijoles, yummy!

Platanos con crema y frijoles

(Platanos con crema y frijoles – kids’ favorite)

rellenito de platano

(Rellenito de platano with beans inside)

Try anything and you will not be disappointed! Guatemalan beans are mandatory, because they are the best black bean you will ever taste! There is also casamiento – the beautiful marriage of rice and beans! For appertizer there is tostada con aguacate or frijol and even pupusas.

And for meat lovers try guatemalan sausage longaniza and lots of kinds typical beef/chicken type of stews that come with a side of rice and beans.

Creamy Chicken

(Creamy chicken with veg and side of rice and beans)

tripas

(Tripas -intestines with side of rice and beans)

Guatemalteca Bakery also serves freshly baked bread and pan dulce in various shapes, forms and colors – all just for few cents each. There are separate ails with imported products from Central America and in the fridge section you can find few kinds of cheese that you can sprinkle at home on anything;) and rich cream….mmmm…and other worth exploring goodies:)

Overall, Guatemalteca Bakery is my huge secret for a perfect under $10 Sunday breakfast. They take ATM, but it’s better to come wiht cash. Don’t forget coffee and jamaica, tamarindo or horchata to drink!

I say come hungry and leave happy! and yes, support the choco banana!
