‘Window’ by Susanna Battin ~ 15 Freeway

L.A. artist Susanna Battin‘s latest work engages in a one day action (this Friday, Dec 2) to restore the horizon normally blocked by a billboard on the 15 Freeway. The digital image will be viewable on the Southbound 15 after the 91 interchange and is best seen from the second from the left lane. The work is part of the artists exploration of the interactions between the manmade and the natural. Keep reading for the full project description, show times, and map link.

We caught up with Battin over email for a quick couple of questions:

Are you a frequent freeway driver?

I limit my freeway driving to only include visits to my grandma, who lives off of the interstate 15 where the new installation is to be shown, and making other long distance trips.

What’s your favorite taco in LA?

Stones Throw Records Celebrates 15 Years on December 22

I got into Stones Throw late, around the time of My Vinyl Weighs a Ton (1999). Back then it represented, at least to me, the Bay Area hip-hop scene and artists like label founder Peanut Butter Wolf, Lootpack, Rasco, Quasimoto/Madlib etc. Now the team is based in LA and is releasing music from some of my favorite new artists like Dam-Funk.

It’s been 15 years of great music and they’re throwing a party on December 22nd at the Exchange. Special pre-sale tickets are on sale now for this event which promises to be epic.

Serene Branson Does Not Want to Go Shopping

You may remember CBS2 reporter Serene from her unfortunate incident at the Grammys earlier this year. Here she lives up to her name at last night’s OccupyLA raid by calmly ignoring the guy in the background, who has some interesting ideas to share with the world. Thanks to @JetSetGraffiti for the link.

Diary of a Photographer: LA Gallery Hopping

Last weekend I was able to cover three shows in one night and explore three distinct galleries in the Los Angeles area, each with their own culture and style. From Mid City Arts to Corey Helford Gallery to Known Gallery it was a great night to explore the LA art scene. This is a collection of photos that tell the story of that night from my perspective…

Birdman “Wish You Were Here ” ~ Opens December 9th

Opening Reception Friday, December 9th 6pm ~ Novel Cafe ~ 811 Traction Avenue

One of our favorite street art photographers has his first solo show this weekend in the arts district– don’t miss it. Birdman’s speciality is putting you in the moment, either as a fly on the wall as street artists do their work in the LA darkness, or by making the viewer a part of the streetscape– lights streak by empty roads as time slows down, creating permanence from the ephemera of street art. You may wish you were here, but you don’t have to be, as the photograph creates a lasting work of art all its own while never straying from the central mission of highlighting some of the best underground public art in the city of Los Angeles.

The Winner of the LA TACO Sticker Contest is Chamuco’s Studio!

We got a lot of really good entries to our contest, but in the end, we couldn’t resist picking this entry “Monster Taquero” from Chamuco’s Studio of El Sereno. We can’t wait to see how this looks as a full color, die-cut sticker! Look for it on walls everywhere sometime next month…

Congratulations to Chamuco’s and to everyone who entered, it was a lot of fun and we hope to do more contests (and print more stickers) in the future!
