It’s that time of the year again where everything that is evil is fun again. That also means that Universal Studios Hollywood is ready to scare the crap outta you with their yearly horror nights. There’s nothing like some pig faced, seven foot goliath scaring the crap out of you with a chain saw buzzing over his head. Yes, Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year.

Last year the scaremazes based on the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St and Texas Chain Saw Massacre movies gave everyone a good scare. We can all use a good scare or a good laugh from watching people get scare. For this year, the movies Saw, Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, Shaun of the Dead and Child’s Play. They’re also including some lives shows based on the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure. Not only that but you’ll be able to go on all the regular rides at night with special twist to them and walk around the Halloween’ed out back lot while riding the terror tram. This will all be ongoing every weekend starting this Friday until Halloween. Event dates are: October 2-3, 9-11, 15-18, 23-25, 28-31. It starts off at 7:00 p.m.; closing hours vary by night throughout the event. If anything else, it’s a great date night because chances are your date will get freaked out and run into your arms. Strangers will also be running into your arms too. trust me on this.

Engaging the audience in multiple facets of the immigration debate, playwright and attorney Evangeline Ordaz has crafted an amazingly powerful story in “Visitors Guide to Arivaca.” This powerful, emotional and thought provoking play highlights the numerous viewpoints that are intertwined with one another when people cross the border, protect it and when it lands at their front door as Ordaz ingeniously shows how one simple act, can cause a butterfly affect.

The play focuses on the journey Valente, who is played by Justin Huen and his wife Linda, played by Marissa Garcia make crossing the border from Mexico to the U.S. via the Arizona border. The hardships and tribulations Valente and Linda face all mirror the same experiences other immigrants face when crossing the border through the desert, which includes carrying enough food and water, knowing which trails to take, dealing with criminals and surviving the arduous trek alive and healthy. This sets off a chain reaction of problems that begin to trickle down to near by residents who live near the border and how the act of people immigrating from Mexico to the U.S. causes numerous live to be intertwined.

Originally commissioned in 2007 for the Borderlands Theater Company in Tuscon, Ordaz spent time with the humanitarian group, “No More Deaths,” which is composed of volunteers who provide medical aid and nourishment to immigrants crossing. The play came as a response to two activist being arrested on the grounds that they helped smuggle an immigrant across the border when they actually drove the person to a hospital to get them immediate medical help. During her time in Arivaca, Ordaz participated the various forms of help the volunteers provide to people crossing whether it was keeping an eye out for people that needed help, setting up water stations or carrying supplies. She also interviewed various volunteers, residents and immigrants crossing to get a better understanding of the reasons why everyone does what they do. This influenced the characters found through out the play.

The desert where the play is set is also part of the Tohono O’odham Nations land, which highlights how the native American tribes that live on or close to the border manage with people crossing and dying on their lands. It also touches on the ethical and legal ramifications that residents face when trying to provide immigrants with aid.

The story is carefully crafted like a hand knit sweater as the focus goes from one character to another, while at the same time giving each character enough time to develop throughout the play. This adds to the multiple layers found in the play that synchronize with one another, never getting tangled up or confusing the audience.

This makes it easier to see some of the critical points Ordaz and Director Armando Molina make about the events in the play and the personal ethical judgments characters encounter when they become involved. This is because they are all linked together by their passions whether it’s trying to work for a better quality of life, fulfill their patriotic duty, clear their conscience or just trying to stay out of it all together.

The design and lighting crew has done an amazing job of creating a small patch of desert inside the Alexandria’s black box theater. Half way through the play the audience will forget that they’re in the middle of downtown and that they’re actually there in the dessert crossing over with Valente and Linda. Especially when the play can take an emotional toll on the audience as the subject matter can hit close to home for audience members who have family members who immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico.

The rest of the cast does an amazing job helping craft the over all story and bringing their own characters to life with vibrant passion and enthusiasm. “Visitors Guide to Arivaca” continues on through October 4 with performances at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students. As a special promotion, LA Taco readers who buy their tickets online can get a discounted price by using the code: randomhero. The Company of Angeles Theater Company is one of Los Angeles’ oldest non-profit theater companies and is celebrating their 50th anniversary this October.

From the press release ~ “On the evenings of June 7, July 12, and August 16, GREGORIO LUKE AT THE FORD, LIFE SIZE MURALS unfolds on the Ford Amphitheatre’s outdoor stage. Though Mr. Luke has performed extensively in the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, which he directed from 1999 to 2007, this would be the first time he brings his mural presentations to a Los Angeles venue. This series of three spectacular multi-media presentations by Gregorio Luke showcases the work of famous Mexican artists. Murals are projected life size using the most advanced projection technology that gives viewers the sensation of being in front of
the original murals.

“We have always known that murals do not move” says Luke, “and yet modern technology allows us to project these murals with absolute fidelity.” Gregorio Luke is a pioneer in these multimedia presentations; he has offered hundreds of lectures in Mexico, Europe and the United States.

Mr. Luke is an engaging speaker and gifted story teller. His talent and knowledge have earned him a worldwide following. Gregorio Luke’s presentations blend the visual and narrative into seamless, intriguing productions. They combine the scale of film, the excitement of story telling and the exhilaration of learning. A curator and lecturer for more than 20 years, Mr. Luke has brought a new way of combining the visual with the narrative.

When prepares for lectures he completely immerses himself in the subject matter in a similar way that an actor preparing for a role. And when Mr. Luke presents his lectures, he does so without notes and using a clear and entertaining communication style. The series will begin Sunday, June 7, 8:30 pm with the work of Diego Rivera. Diego Rivera is the most well

known of the Mexican muralists. Throughout the presentation Luke will explore all aspects of Diego Rivera’s life and career; it will include samples of his cubist paintings, and follow Diego to his return to Mexico and his artistic experiences in the U.S. Ten of his murals will be projected life size, including the controversial Man at the Crossroads, destroyed by Rockefeller because Rivera refused to remove the portrait of Russian revolutionary leader Lenin and masterpieces such as The Dream of a Sunday Afternoon at the Alameda Park, and his murals in Mexico’s Palacio de Bellas Artes.

On Sunday, July 12, 8:30 pm the focus will be on the art of Rufino Tamayo, considered the great art dissenter in Mexico. He challenged Diego Rivera and his colleagues and refused to include politics in his art. Instead he found inspiration in Mexico’s Pre Hispanic and popular art. Tamayo became one of the most respected contemporary artists of the 20th Century and is considered one of the master colorists of all time. Murals to be shown are México Moderno y Nacimiento de Nuestra Nacionalidad at the Instituto
Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, Prometeo for the Library of the University of Puerto Rico, Israel de Ayer e Israel de Hoy for the Israeli oceanliner Transatlántico Shalom and Dualidad,at the Museo Nacional
de Antropología, Mexico City.

The series will conclude on Sunday, August 16, 8:00 pm with an in-depth look at the art of Miguel Covarrubias, perhaps the most complete Mexican artist of the 20th century. This presentation will discuss all aspects of his career. In addition to projecting his murals there will be live blues music and dances inspired by Josephine Baker, Balinese, Oaxacan, and modern dancers from Mexico will interpret the classic ballet Zapata for which Covarrubias made the scenery and costumes.”

The Prometheus mural and preparatory sketch collection by Jose Clemente Orozco at Pomona College marks the beginning of modern Mexican art influence in the United States as well as muralsim. The college has in its collection 17 original preliminary sketches for the mural that he painted with his assistant Jorge Juan Crespo de la Serna.

He was initially invited to paint by Frary Hall architect, Summer Splading and teacher Jose Pijoan. Serving as an eating hall for the school’s students, the mural’s significance and impact in the public viewing space is lost to some of the students at the college. Whether it’s because of culture differences or lack of understanding for the art, it’s a sigh of relief that the college has taken numerous steps to preserve and maintain the mural for the last 79 years.

This has included several projects that tailored to the murals exterior and interior walls. Thanks to all of the restoration efforts taken by the college, the mural will last longer and will be available for future students to go and see it in all its magnificence. The 17 preliminary drawings that can be viewed by request, offer more insight into the murals legacy and what Orozco wanted to create. The sketches show the groundwork of the mural and offer unique insight as to how he went about planning and painting the mural.

All the different sketches of Prometheus, the side panels and the God head show that Orozco planned ahead as much as he could before he started his work. The sketches show that in the planning stages, he divided the center part of the mural into different grids that would allow him to paint the piece one at a time without having to back track or make any mistakes. While the sketches go into details about the planning, they also show some of the normal wear and tear and add a little mystery as to what was happening when he was painting and working on the mural.

The sketches have are stored in special frames that will help maintain their preserve them for the public. While the sketches may have a high value on in the art world, original sketches for such a prolific mural are priceless and are available to anyone who wishes to see them. The school provides access and guides for the mural and it’s in a city that’s not easy to get to unless you have transportation or you make a day out of it.

This limits the availability to students and art lovers who may not have the resources to visit the school and see the mural. The lack of awareness of the mural and its impact is also lost because not many people know about it, it’s history and the first commissioned mural in the U.S. and the impact it still has today with artist who still paint murals in the streets of L.A. Just as Prometheus gave fire to humans, Orozco’s mural is a gift that is under appreciated.

For this years Peel Here, Sticky Rick and his partner Damon Robinson, Director of the NOMAD Art Compound, wanted to do something new. Not just because they’ve moved offices from the ghetto mansion to The Nomad Art Compound in “Frog Town,” but because they both know there’s more to stickers than just slapping them on. They want to take sticker art to the next level because when someone takes their time to create an original work of art on a disposable surface, their passion and commitment to their work shines through. They want to help these artist make the transition from the streets to the art world because they’re just as talented, if not more so than some of the artist featured in art galleries. They want to inspire all street artist to come together and unite because, “when it’s all put together, it turns into a monster” said Rick.

At Peel Here, there are no boundaries or restrictions on what you can create with a sticker, it all depends on the artist and how crazy they can get when they’re let loose. The goal of Peel Here is not only to showcase all of the talented art, but to help the next generation of artist trying to come up and Peel Here is one of the few shows that does that. There’s no preferential treatment here for anyone because that’s not what the show is about. Big names stand on the same level platform as young guns trying to come up. Everyone is on the same level and that openness is the heart of Peel Here. No one goes to a Peel Here show to start a fight or talk shit, they go to meet the faces behind the sticker and to meet new ones along the way as even one trades their works back and forth. Damion said that when you see a single sticker out on the street, it may have a message to depending on where it’s at and what the art is, but when all of those stickers are put together as a whole collective, it tells a story.

Over the last few years, more and more artist have been using stickers as their medium not because it’s inexpensive and simple, but because they know they can still get a powerful message across to the public. That’s why for this years show, Rick reached out to artist who have established themselves on the streets, but have also been giving back to their communities. Timoi, Galo Make One, N.O.M.A.D. have been working with kids in after school programs, mentoring the next generation of artist.

By focusing their students creativity into more positive outlets and building their self-esteem, all three artist want their students to take charge of their personal lives and to pursue their dreams. All three artist have been guiding and helping their students create art instillations that are going to be featured during the show. Timoi has been working with a group of students from South East High School. Through the after school program “Envision,” Timoi has been mentoring her students in developing their artistic talents and finding their own voice. Timoi has been working with kids through after school programs for a few years and loves every part of it. Her students are all artistically gifted, whether it’s drawing their own unique characters, stencils, stickers and fonts and with Timoi guiding them, they’re contributing with their own art instillation that will be featured at Peel Here. Timoi nurtures her students artistic talents anyway she cans, but she wants to expose them to the art world and show them how far they can take their artistic talents.

Galo Make One has been working with kids for the last three and a half years through Art Share L.A. Working with kids of all ages and artistic talent, Galo also mentors kids in developing their artistic skills and fine tunning them. The after school program helps kids become more productive and at the same time prepares them kids for life beyond school. His students have also been working on creating an art instillation that is going to be featured at Peel Here. Ivan Aise is one of those students and loves what Galo and his other mentors Ernesto and David are doing for him and the other kids involved in the program. At 19, Aise is one of the older students and is a gifted artist who is trying to start his career. Trying to decide between focusing on his art or becoming a nurse is a life decision he’s trying to figure out, but with the help of Galo and his mentors, Aise hopes to make the right decision when he starts attending East Los Angeles College in February.

By helping build up the student’s self-esteem and confidence, Galo wants to empower them to not only take charge of their art, but of their lives as well. Making stickers, stencils and even silk-screening are just a few of the ways that confidence is built up and giving them an outlet for their creativity. Galo wants to bring out the “closet artist” in his students because he knows some may be shy about their art. Even though Aise hasn’t decided on his future career, he’s going to follow in Galos foot steps and go back to his community to help out kids they way he is receiving help. Aise is thankful and appreciative of all of the work and time his mentors take to help him because he never had that kind of attention when he was growing up and that’s the key says Galo.

By committing himself to helping his students create a portfolio and getting their names out there, he knows that they’re on the right path. N.O.M.A.D. has also been working with his kids in getting their piece together and ready for the show. N.O.M.A.D. has been guiding and inspiring his students with creative, artistic outlets to help them be more active within their own community. “I have had students create sticker art to trade with other sticker art kids and collect their artwork in blackbooks we provide,” said N.O.M.A.D. The students have been involved in not just making stickers, but also zines and designing shirts. Sticky Rick himself has donated materials and stickers to his students inspiring them to be more creative. In the long run, N.O.M.A.D. wants to help his students refine their techniques and to open up the program up to more kids from any age group. He also said that more kids will be drawn to the program after his students see their work up on display at Peel Here.
