“Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealously. The shadow of greed, that is.” ~ Yoda

Dia de los Muertos is one of my favorite day of the year. We celebrate the lives of those that have moved on and relearn an appreciation for the ones we have around us. Every culture has their own tradition for honoring their ancestors, celebrating their lives and sharing a meal with them again once a year, when they make their way back to us to see how things are going. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate these kind of traditions because they’re all as unique as the individuals we are honoring. That’s why it’s beautiful to see more and more spaces in L.A. start their own celebrations in their own way. All events are listed by date and have a link to an event page. Call ahead or double check the event page for any last minute updates or changes. More events should be popping up as the day of nears, so stay posted for updates or if you have a show you know of, let us know in the comments. — Erick

Danza Floricanto/USA’s Dia de Los Muertos Celebration takes its inspiration from the very traditional Day of the Dead activities in Mexico-altar offerings of favorite foods and flowers honoring our dead, processions to the grave sites, songs, candles. sugar skulls, skeleton dioramas, and paper cuttings-and gives it a contemporary flavor.designed to entertain and delight the whole family. Choreographed by Gema Sandoval, this hour long program is a series of dance theater vignettes orchestrated by “La Catrina,” the skeleton like figure created by turn of the century Mexican graphic artist, José Guadalupe Posada. These snapshots of life-a mother who lost her child, star crossed lovers, a bull fighter, field hands, among others-become an affirmation of life through dance. Floricanto’s program combines traditional folklore with contemporary themes and humor in order to appeal to the whole family. Additionally, in the lobby of the theater, we set up a community altar, where audience members are invited to include the name of their departed loved ones as they come in to watch the performance and in this way become part of the event.

Self Help Graphics & Art was the first organization in the country to create a free public celebration of Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead through the leadership and initiation of local artists in 1973. As in the different Mexican regions, Self Help Graphics’ celebration is distinct to the East Side artistic community it represents. Every year, on November 2nd, Self Help Graphics’ yearly day of remembering that life is a dream from which, one day we will awaken, celebrates our beloved who are no longer with us. Every year we paint our faces in duality — half calaca and half ourselves, revealing the ancient comedy of life as our ancestors have taught us.

The 7th Annual “Day of the Dead Music and Art Festival” will challenge your mosh and dance moves with Mexico City’s irreverent metal-cumbiancheros band El Conjunto Nueva Ola. And to satisfy hungry and thirsty souls, complimentary sweet bread and tamales, along with a selection of sponsor-presented beverages will keep attendees celebrating until supplies last. In true AlBorde.com fashion, the “Day of the Dead Music and Art Festival” supports independent talent and local artists by providing a space for vendors to sell their Day of the Dead merchandise, and showcase their skill through an altar and art competition.

Times are tough, we know! That’s why our events are ALWAYS free. Save your cash for the onsite vendors and to buy us a round of drinks after the event.

For the 9th year in a row, Centro Cultural de México is organizing Noche de Altares (A Night of Altars). This year Centro is proud to present this free event in partnership with Calacas Inc., a Santa Ana business that promotes art and culture through products made by indigenous people living in México and local artisans living in Southern California. Noche de Altares is a community-based event celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), one of México’s oldest, indigenous festivals. Organized by volunteers, the purpose of the celebration is to honor the ancient traditions of the festival and bring community members together through art, culture, and compassion.

For one night, families, students, community organizations, activists, artists, and businesses are invited to build an altar in memory of a deceased loved one or to bring awareness to a social issue. Participants in past events have dedicated their altars to their parents, siblings, and friends. They have also dedicated their altars to soldiers who have died in war, women who have made a significant impact in history, and people who have died of AIDS, cancer, and diabetes. In addition to viewing beautifully created altars, attendees will be entertained by cultural performances and live music. Children can get their face painted and participate in free, art workshops. Local artists will be selling their wares and local restaurants will be selling their most delicious dishes. Finally, attendees will have a photo opportunities with La Catrina, the modern-day icon of Día de los Muertos created by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada.

Mexicans and Central Americans celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, a day of remembrance for family members and friends who have passed. The Armenian-Greek-Assyrians who perished by Ottoman government ethnic cleansing orders in 1959 are also remembered and celebrated by modern-day Armenians. Armenian Genocide graves do not exist. Armenians were deported to the desert, which saved the Ottoman government the expense of ammunition and mass grave clean-up.

Scientific analysis of post-traumatic stress disorder and subsequent recovery requires recognizing the trauma, confronting the source, and supporting the grieving process to allow healing to happen. Accordingly, “Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide” installation consists of three parts.

Sophia Gasparian’s childlike aesthetic juxtaposed with social satire suggest the final process of healing from the denied death trauma. Survival of the “unwanted” and the ability of the oppressed to contribute to the newly adopted culture are signs of social triumph over historic evil. “Requiem For the Forgotten: The Armenian Genocide” includes Gasparian’s collaborations with Los Angeles based fellow artists Lydia Emily, Terri Berman, Daisuke Okamoto, Douglas Alvarez, Farzad Kohan and LeNic, addressing Native American Genocide, the current AIDS epidemic, terrorist feared world and the declaration of Jihad (holy war) on ignorance and institutionalized oppression. Harmonic collaborations amongst these artists, the gallery and the audience are a form of a non-violent discourse.

Zareh addresses the historical events of the 1915 Armenian Genocide while Kaloust Guedel’s masterfully executed and emotionally charged work provides the immediate and primal confrontation.

Arpiné Shakhbandaryan maps world genocide sites with a focus on the Armenian Genocide.

“Guess where I’m at??? It never ends”

That’s what @Lamudercop tweeted in the early morning on October 11th. Sal La Barbera, according to his google and twitter profiles, is a supervisor for the Criminal Gang/Homicide Division. Hes been with LAPD for 30 years, 24 of those with CGHD and is the current Squad Leader of FBI/LAPD SOS ll Homicide Task Force. A New York transplant, he’s also provided consulting to writers and film makers throughout Hollywood and appears on television regularly.

Everyone knows the life of a murder cop is tough, and no one expects them to be cuddly, but I’m baffled as to why he would tweet a picture of a recently deceased person lying on the street and not show even a shred of compassion for the person or their family. On the job, cynicism is to be expected, but the world of social media changes things as it becomes public.

From reading the twitter timeline, the picture is of the corpse of a murder victim somewhere near 106th and Wilmington. When I saw the picture and the caption La Barbera wrote, the first thing that came into my mind was “fuck the police”. Actually, “FUCK DA MUTHA FUCKING POLICE!!!” is probably more accurate.

It’s one thing for media to ignore a death in a poor neighborhood and spend 30 minutes on the Michael Jackson trial, they’re idiotic like that and we don’t pay their salaries. But when an officer, no less a supervisor with 30 years on the force uses twitter to make light of someone’s tragedy, it makes me angry. It’s not just the coldness, it’s the double standard. You would never see a cop post shit like that on the Seal Beach massacre because people would be all over them and someone would get fired, reassigned, or reprimanded within days.

Social media is a two way street and can be a powerful thing when used correctly. The detective can tweet all the pics of food, friends and the things on the job he sees as he pleases, but in my opinion this crosses the line. It’s disrespectful to the community he’s supposed to be “protecting and serving”. I’m pretty sure that Sal or someone over at the LAPD is going see this and possibly take some sort of action against me. Maybe I’ll end up as one of his tweets. Who knows, but you can be sure I’ll tweet that shit right back. And that’s the power of social media.

Recently, LA Taco was invited to check out the finals for the “Las Vegas Spin off,” over at the Marquee Night Club. Having never been to Vegas before, I jumped at the opportunity to cover this event and do a write up, while at the same time, check out the Vegas scene. The night was to feature 7 finalist, chosen from a panel of judges that include Lil’ John, DJ Vice, Sol Shafer, LMFAO and Markus Schulz. The winner, would get a $10,000 home studio, Puma gear, & a guest DJ appearance at a Vegas club. Needless to say that I never did find out who won because I never even got past the door. Sad face :(

This is is what the club looked liked from the outside. Not my typical crowd considering I showed up to the place wearing tennis, dickies, regular t-shirt and a track jacket. Needless to say that the bouncer at the door didn’t like my fashion sense and totally denied me entrance. Tried slipping him some feria, but to no avail. Plan B went into affect, which was buying a collar shirt and dress shoes on the spot at any near by store. Denied once more. $200 + dress shoes is not in my budget this month.

Photo: Al Powers/Powers Imagery

Had I gotten to go inside the club, I would have seen things like this crowd having a good time.

Photo: Al Powers/Powers Imagery

Or the DJ’s, like Eric de la Torre here, doing their thing and helping everyone have a good time.

Even though the club event was a flop, we still had a great time in Vegas trying to find the cheapest places to drink on a tight budget and doing the tourist thing since I’m a first timer. We resorted to doing some Neilson test for some extra cash, buying booze at near by liquor stores and cruising the strip. During the two days there, the only times I would run into anyone that’s Latino/a was when they were trying to hand me fliers for call girls, serving food or standing across the counters at shops/stores. Seeing all the homeless folks asking for change, booze or trying to sell you something. I can see why everyone numbs themselves with booze and excess the entire time they’re there.

But then, there are those moments of serenity that call out to you from the far off distance. Familiar sounds, sights and smells that seem like a drop of water in a desert. My friend and I could hear magical music being created by that accordion, sweeping us off our feet and drawing in us closer like a pied piper. Hearing those ever so familiar ballads was heart warming. That familiar sombrero and red, white and red colors, making my feet move to the rhythm as if I was in a cantina in L.A. again. Turns out the musico was an L.A. native via Mexico and only recently moved to Vegas because he couldn’t make a living. Now he’s making a few hundred bucks a week, serenading those crossing his bridge. He does what he wants, when he wants. Plays the songs he wants to play and shares his smiles with those who understand and share a smile or story in return. He ain’t tripping on looking the part or trying to look a certain way to get in to any club. He just marches to the beat of his accordion, where ever that may take him next.

Save the date for June 18th 6 p.m. for what will be one of many art shows that looks at the Dream Act movement from the point of view of the individuals who make it up. This is a show that has been a long time in the making and through a collective effort of individuals and artist, a space has been created in which the movement will be seen a little differently that the normal political context. Seen the way we see it ourselves everyday going to work, school, being activist, artist, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons … human beings making the best of what was given to us.People see us as the students, dreamers, activist and youth, but rarely do those same people get to see the other sides of our lives outside of these spaces. Truly, a persons personally is like a kaleidoscope, perpetually changing, sometimes too fast to notice.

We will be showing the works of Pocho1, Im;Arte and Julio Salgado. We will also be unveiling of the DREAM Mural and premiering the latest video from Dreamers Adrift. Janet Gonzalez, Jesus Iniguez, Mariella Saba and Erick Huerta will be sharing spoken word/poetry. Food and drinks will be provided for the evening.

“Dream Visualized” Images by Pocho1 This project was inspired by the life of Cinthya Felix and Tam Tran, one of our great women Dream Act leaders who passed away last May. Tam was an activist, film maker and scholar. Tam was also a loving sister, friend and daughter. Like many undocumented students, Tam had different identities that many people don’t see.Through this project we plan to capture these different identities, in order to put a human face on the immigration story. In this project, we will follow seven Dream students throughout their entire day. We want to capture them with their families, friends, at school, at work, and in their communities.
International photographer Pocho-1 documents political and cultural movements. He began fighting for the interests of his community while furthering his education at Cal State Northridge. Studying under Rudy Acuna, founder of the first Xican@ studies department. Moving back to the Bay Area, he attended San Francisco State University earning a MA in Ethnic Studies. He is presently pursuing his 2nd Masters at USC Rossier School of Education.

Im:arte was created by a collaboration of artist that believed deeply in something bigger than themselves, “a social movement powered by creativity and imagination.” Carol Belisa (Mocabel), Laura Flores, Leticia Hernandez, Omar Ramirez, Ray Hernandez (Aryer), and Victor Zuniga worked diligently to launch Im:Arte Collective, their works will be on display.

Julio Salgado is the creator of the online comic strip “Liberty For All,” which follows the life of a young undocumented college graduate named Liberty. His activist artwork has become a staple of the DREAM Act movement. College students across the country have used Salgado’s artwork to call attention to the DREAM Act. His work has been praised by OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano, KPCC-FM 89.3′s Multi-American blog and the influential journal ColorLines.
The love between a straight man and a straight woman is what has always been defined as a ‘legal’ marriage in polite society. Alas, what if that same love was shared between a gay man and a straight woman ? A rose by any other name would still smell the same, so why wouldn’t their love have the same bearing as any other couples, regardless of sexual orientation ? “Bordering on Love,” the newest production at the Company of Angels deals with that very question, when that line between what is love and what is love as defined by the federal government cross each other. Playwright Evangelina Ordaz and director Armando Molina question the governments policy to only define marriage when it applies to couples who are immigrants and/or gay, “exploring the futility of attempting to regulate human need or emotion” says Ordaz.

Set in Atlanta Georgia, Antoinette , played by TJ O’Connell, is an up an coming drag queen who dreams of becoming Miss Gay USA. Yet, the lack of confidence in himself comes through on stage, holding him back as a performer and as an individual. Marilu, played by Silvia Tovar, a Mexican immigrant with dreams of becoming a make up artist, cleaning houses by day and going to beauty school at night. The only thing holding her back is an apprehensive boyfriend and no legal status in the US. Like a humming bird drawn to a sweet flower, Marilu and Antoinette’s working relationship blossoms into a beautiful relationship that has them competing in the Miss Gay USA Pageant. Yet, their dreams come crashing down when Marilu is arrested and placed in deportation proceedings, jeopardizing not only their shot at Miss Gay USA, but the new found friendship and life both have established together.

The shows energy, humor and story match up perfectly with an in your face “Sex in the City” attitude mixed in with some“To Wong Foo: Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar” and “Under the Same Moon.” Ordaz’ curvaceous writing and balancing of the intersections between the queer and immigrant communities display a respect and understanding that is sorely missing at times in productions like this. there are several scenes in which Marilu is coming to terms with her lack of status and Antoinette coming to terms with himself and his lifestyle choices. The lines between discrimination of legal status and life style choice become one in the same and impose the question on the audience of what one is willing to risk and endure in order to achieve their dreams in this day and age.

The supporting cast of drag queens gracefully dance on stage in heels, tight dresses and heavy make up, providing the kind of comedy relief that helps the story progress, even at the most intense and serious moments. Molina’s directing makes use of the COA’s limited space to it’s full advantage going from back stage dressing room to pageant run way in a matter of seconds. With subtle jokes and references to the queer and immigrant culture, the quick witted humor found through the entire play will keep anyone on their toes.

The play runs through July 2nd, with performances every weekend starting at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights and at 7 p.m. on Sunday nights, which is also union night and members get $5 off regular entrance. General tickets are $20, $12 for students with I.D. and $15 for seniors with I.D. and discounts available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets can be purchased the day of or online at company of angels and they are located at 501 S. Spring Street, 3rd Floor.

From the press release: “The Chinese American Museum (CAM) and El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument are proud to present Dreams Deferred: Artists Respond to Immigration Reform opening this Thursday, Dec. 9 This exhibit will showcase local artists exploring the tensions, repercussions, hopes, and dreams of immigrant communities in the face of new immigration legislation, through a broad spectrum of art including street art, graffiti art, sculpture, painting, and multimedia installations. “Dreams Deferred is a powerful and timely exhibit that captures the complexities of the immigrant experience”, notes Kent Wong Director of the Center for Labor Research and Education at UCLA. “Special focus is on the plight of millions of undocumented immigrant youth and students who are unfortunate victims of a broken system. This art show brings together talented local artists who express their views on immigration in creative and dynamic ways.”

U.S. immigration laws have long reflected a lasting legacy of racial exclusion starting with the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, the first legislation to restrict immigration based on race and ethnicity. This legacy of immigration legislation targeting immigrant communities has since reemerged in the recent decades with California’s Proposition 187, and Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070, as attempts at inhibiting the livelihoods of undocumented immigrants.

Dreams Deferred continues the current national dialogue about immigration, kicked-off by the recent opening of CAM’s Remembering Angel Island, an exhibition commemorating the 100th year anniversary of the opening of the West Coast’s first immigration station. Both exhibitions will serve to shed light on the parallels of past and current immigration policies and reform, and how Los Angeles’ diverse immigrant communities collectively share not only their immigrant histories, but also many of the challenges facing new immigrant communities today.

Considering how I got a lot of positive feed back from last years impromptu Day of the Dead guide, I was debating whether or not to make another this year too. I mean, I do have a life beyond my random ramblings on this here bloggito. But then again, I love DOD and I love sharing the tradition and parties with as many people as I can. My homework will still be there after I finish. So here it is, your 2010 Dia de los Muertos guide to events you probably already know about and some you may have missed. Also, Day of the Dead is also election day. So, after you vote between a @#!*% and a turd, which I won’t get into lest I be called childish names again, start making your way to Self Help Graphics for the original Dia de los Muertos celebration, going on its 37th year and it’s free. Free !! You can also print and wear this kick @#!*% mask made by Cuéntame, the ¡Latino Instigators!, for a get out the vote campaign. I think it’s hilarious because if you can vote and don’t for whatever reason you have, then you are a cabron and you have no right to complain about how bad things are either. Also, most of these events are pretty self explanatory, soo I’m gonna cut corners and just copy and paste info with flyers and pics really. Anyway, enough jibba-jabber, on to the festivities

“Better To Die On My Feet” explores a contemporary approach to memorial, celebrating the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead. The title is based on the proverb, “Better to die on my feet, than to live on my knees” by Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, urging us to stand up for what we believe, even if it means dying for it. This notion aims at memorializing the dead through the memory of them living with resistance and pride. The exhibition is comprised of artists from different regions in the U.S., working in a variety of mediums, including photography, installation, drawing, painting and performance.

Up until this point, I have pretty much copied and pasted all the info and events going on. Now, this may seem like I’m hatting on Hollywood Forever for adding commentary to the post, but I can’t help it. I went last year and it was a great event, EXCEPT with a few hang ups that I have about it. Because this is at Hollywood and it’s meant to introduce the DOD tradition to people who are not familiar with it, that’s what I love about the event. However, they lose me on a few other things that not only don’t go along with the tradition, but kinda disrespect it. I’m talking about their altar contest. DOD isn’t a contest, even if first prize get’s $3,000. It’s about sharing and celebrating, by having a contest, to me, it cheapens the experience and tradition because it’s not about who can decorate things better than someone else, it’s about celebrating those who are no longer here for one night. I’ve gotten over the fact that it’s $10 to get in and like another $20 to buy food for one person and that they charge $10 for parking, it’s understandable that they spend money to make this event happen and need to break even, cool. But if they really wanna keep true to tradition, they should stop having the contest and maybe use that money for something else, like lowering the prize of admission and parking for attendees. If they fine tuned some of these things, the event would be 20 times better. With DOD growing more and more popular every year, it’s only natural that some company would use the event as another excuse to throw some concert/event that makes more money than pay tribute to the celebrations. But hey, that’s just me.

General Admission: $10 per person, children under 10 years free (please bring exact change)
