Our friends at East LA Rep are one of the 52 theater companies in Los Angeles who were chosen to produce a week’s worth of Suzan Lori Park’s 365 plays. East LA Rep came up with the cool concept of performing the plays outdoors to give the audience a tour of East Los Angeles landmarks.

“Let us show you East Los the way we see it and prove to you that the heart, el corazon, of Los Angeles lies on the other side of the river. Please join us on this drive-by journey through East Los Angeles”

Founded in 1877, Evergreen cemetery is the oldest living cemetery in LA.

If you don’t know Suzan-Lori Parks’ work, here’s a taste of her past “far-out” plays:

“FUCKING A (produced in 2000) is the story of the divisions of genders, classes, races, and generations, set in an indeterminate future, where the priviledged and the poor have come to speak entirely different langauges and where it is a crime to procreate out of wedlock.”

“TOPDOG/UNDERDOG (2001) is Parks’ riff on the way we are defined by history. It tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names, given to them as a joke, foretell a lifetime of sibling rivalry.”

Even the talented Parks could be shooting her own foot by writing 365 plays in 365 days. Does quantity take over quality? I think it’s worth checking it out and letting us know.
