I feel like just about every webcomic out there could be described in two long sentences. The first a setting and subject matter: generic suburbia & video games. generic suburbia & inter-character dating. talking dinosaurs. soap opera set in grad school. etc. etc. and the second sentence a short summation of the strips' appeal, sarcasm & violence. snarkiness. cute moments. slogan worthy one-liners. clever philosophising. whatever. I don't really mean this as much of an insult, I read a lot of webcomics, and I don't find this kind of specificity of audience and voice to be a bad thing, the long tail and all that.... but achewood is different.

I have a real hard time describing it to friends. It's a talking animal strip, but you kind of have to forget that, it's really just about northern california semi-employeds... but it's also surreal as hell... except for the months on end where its not... it can be about pop culture, but it usually isn't... the appeal is sometimes in the punchlines, but a lot of the time it's in the wording of the setup or even just the ridiculous posing of the simply drawn characters. It's a rarity in post-WWII comics, something honestly fresh and unique and funny all at the same time, but without ever devolving into Zippy the Pinhead willful obscurism either.

There are tons of good webcomics out there. Achewood is the only great one I've ever read... and reread... and rereread... heads and shoulders better than anything in your newspaper.

Oh hell, Chris just pulled the curtain on the freaking kidney bean. http://chrisonstad.blogspot.com/2007/06/return-to-bacon-senses-and-stove.html Anybody with that much sense, gets all the license to do or say whatever they please in their off hours. To criticise anything but their artwork, is so puerile. It's like the morons who thought Wodehouse collaborated with the Nazis. Clueless. Look at "Ray Smuckles, he gets things done" and appreciate the magnificent humor. Smile. Laugh. Shutup.

I think we watch the same TV shows at the same time. Marcel was entertaining, like a lot of clowns. And way to be diplomatic shouting out to both Fey and Sorkin in this contentious time.
