L’Equipe Salon Inc. has two locations, one on Melrose & Arden and one in Silver Lake. The one I know and love is on Silver Lake Blvd, just some fifty feet away from Spaceland, where the one and only Nazaret a.k.a. Nazz works. He is my hair God and should be yours, too.

When a hairstylist uses the word vanguardista in casual conversation and makes both his lady and gentlemen clients drool, I have no choice but to fall in love. However, putting his heavenly olive, tinted with a hint-of-brick biceps, and nearly transparent sea green eyes aside, he is one hardworking dude, and he’s good at what he does. Real good. Not fake good. Real good.

Before my visit to Nazz at L’Equipe, I had only once been at a salon nice enough to give out a robe, rather than one of those awful synthetic sheets with a strip of Velcro as a circular fastener around the neck. My wash, cut, blow-drying and styling was reasonable: $50. 50 bucks to look like a million more, I believe, is a fine tradeoff…

Located in a house structure, L’Equipe has a high ceiling with a constant fresh breeze undoubtedly aided by the large tree outside that also shades two wooden benches where bored boyfriends and girlfriends congregate while waiting. Also, considering I have no idea what kind of tree it is that gives L’Equipe its paradisiacal effect might indicate that this little nook is a lovely space for urban escape to relax under.
The décor is Egyptian, primarily in gold—male statuettes with headdress, lion heads, and throne-like chairs in the washing area, with detailed engravings of suns and pyramids. While Nazz runs the warm water over my head, I fantasize that he fans me with a palm branch, dips grapes in honey, and feeds them to me. I realize that this might interfere with the task at hand, so I give up the fantasy. Finally, when it’s all cut, dried and dolled up, I tip him generously, because he has just taken me from toe’ up to tadow!

Cut: $20
If the cut requires more time and technique, then up to the following range: $60-$70
If hair coloring is involved, including a haircut: $60

Women

Trim: $35
Cut: $50
Highlights & color: $130-$185

For both men and women $30 for a hair treatment that is a silk based with almond extract for hair reconstruction.
