the newspaper world is very inward focused at this time, which is wierd since it should be a place where all the people who wonder what the outside world is up to come together. there is an atmosphere of oppressive seriousness and duty: fun is frivolous. thats why i read blogs with tv screen caps and look at LA taco when i have time to learn about the world. i want to be delighted, not preached to. newspapers used to be cooler in the 70′s, more art projects less earnest snoozefest prize collecting. the LA times has had her moments of great writing, i’m no hater. but they should be doing video and visual stuff better since thats what LA gives so good.

Yeah the LA Times really does need to focus more on the city it lives in! Why do they try to be all things to all people, since as the article you linked shows, people who want that kind of coverage read the NY Times anyway.

I started looking at the NY Times more myself, I hate to concede anything to NY, but their articles seem to go wider and deeper (heh heh) into the world. The LA Times takes a few stories found anywhere and makes them way too long, the diversity and detail in the NY Times’ coverage I hate to say is just vastly better.
