A tip of the fedora--or, in my case, an appreciative flip of the net-veil on my femme fatale picture hat, to Chandler, of course, and to Eric Redson and TACO for the trip. I was a tyke of the Postwar Era, experimented on for the greater bad of insuring plenty of military-industrial zombie-cattle in the perpetual war$ to come. We eat, drink, breathe and wrap ourselves in petrochemicals--from crude to JPL satanists' rocket fuel--in LA; our blood is noir; it's a wonder that we live and don't look worse than Dorian Grey's portrait*. Chandler was a oilman and saw what happened when the derricks replaced the groves. He believed and perpetuated the lie that the LA Basin was a desert held off by sprinklers; he bought that from... Well, see CHINATOWN and study its roots: Half true story by regional history and half true story inspired by the history of the actors. Welcome to LA!
