Red Light Camera Update ~ Westchester

Photo Enforced

Some updated information on the red light camera issue we’ve been discussing here for some time. The latest LAPD blog updates us on the following:

  • The new red-light cams double as spy-cams. Unlike older models, the new Nestor Traffic Systems cameras can be turned on “during emergencies” to give live images of the scene.
  • There are currently 23 red light cameras in operation in the City of Los Angeles
  • The newest activated system is in West Los Angeles near LAX at the intersection of Manchester and Airport
  • The new system is a video system and can grab 30 still frames per second, allowing for facial ID of the driver

As always, you can see maps and get more information on the cameras at photoenforced.com, which also has them on a map for Los Angeles.

I just got a $159. ticket for making a right turn on red from Manchester eastbound to Airport southbound, caught by that new camera one morning on my way to work. The morning it first “flashed” me, I’m like…why did it flash me? So the next morning I looked for a “no turn on red” sign and there is no sign that I can see anywhere that says we can’t turn on red. So I’ve been turning on red there every morning (it’s always red when I get to it) and getting flashed every day. In the picture they sent me, there’s another car driving northbound on Airport making a left turn on Manchester westbound, so there was obviously no car coming down Airport. What gives…I can’t figure out what the infraction is.

Today I did exactly what CJ Says above. I made a right hand turn on a red onto Manchester from Airport Blvd. As I did I saw a camera flash. I started question myself if there as a sign that said no turn on red, I went back and there wasn’t. I then started thinking if I rolled it but I know I didn’t. Also there was no traffic driving east bound on the Manchester. Should I expect a ticket because I saw the flash? If so why would I get a ticket when it is legal to turn right on a red if you come to a complete stop? How much are the tickets.

i just got a $435 ticket in the mail for turning right on red from manchester westbound to airport northbound. i do this everyday on the way to work. ironically, i got the ticket a week ago but noticed it flash yesterday too. i wonder how many tickets i will get in the mail for this light camera. are they allowed to give us a ticket for turning right on red with there isn’t a sign saying otherwise? Can this ticket be fought?
