Oblio, I grew up eating at that Taco Bell stand on Amar. I recall it having a sort of lava rock gas flaming fountain 'Volcano' thingy out front.

With all the more authentic taco offerings, I can't say I have eaten at a taco bell in recent years. But I will credit their 59 cent burritos for keeping me fed when I was a starving student in college.

I happened to be reading about Scofield units recently...it's sort of an odd system based on how much you have to dilute something before you can't taste the spiciness any more (invented before anybody came up with an accurate chemical test. Anyways, pure capsaicin is 16,000,000 Scofield units, making 800, well, less impressive than it sounds. Not doubting it's spicy by fast food standards, though.

but it is a part of fast-food culture, which i think the article does a good job of conveying. The fast food industry is almost precisely the opposite of the taco culture-- it's based on market research and cost savings, as opposed to building a community business that becomes a local institution.

Always amazed at how well these
"come and meet us bloggers!" work really well for the companies putting on a show. Taco Bell used to have good tacos ages ago (when they actually cooked their own ground beef, yes that was a long time ago.) As far as taco's go in the city of Angels, the tacos are just garbage. And take it from me, someone who used to work at a Taco Bell in the early 90's when they were first moving to all meat products cooked in a plastic bag and most of the veggies were pre-cut (also out of a bag), YOU ARE BETTER OFF EATING GOURMET CAT FOOD, than that highly processed shit.

Great post! I grew up eating many Taco Bell tacos at their store in La Puente where I grew up in the 1960's. I think they were $.29 each and my typical order was three tacos, refried beans and a coke, all for about $1.50! What a deal. I must say their quality is hit or miss these days... sometimes the taco meat looks and tastes like Alpo, other times it can be fresh and tasty. In a pinch, I will ALWAYS munch at Taco Bell over any other fast food joint.
