Taco Lifestyle Under Attack ~ Los Altos

SAVE THE TACO TRUCKS

DATELINE LOS ALTOS, CA: Our neighbors to the north, probably noticing a surge in the taco lifestyle among the youth, are trying to ban a popular taco truck which stops outside Los Altos High. Harking back to the ‘red scare’ of the 1950’s, the city fathers and school administration seemingly fear the taco lifestyle and everything it stands for– independent thinking, total breakdown in race/class divisions, appreciation of world cuisine, and convenient, portable food. Call it the “red sauce scare” of 2007. Attempts to ban or overly-regulate taco vendors, from Salinas to Brooklyn to New Orleans and even in our own city have now reached society’s least-deserving victims– hungry high school kids. It’s being done under the phony mantle of “health” when we all know that the average taco truck has more healthy food then a typical public school lunchroom. Fear of a taco planet is perhaps normal, but it will take a nation of millions to hold us back.

That’s interesting, since overall in San Francisco the taco trucks tend to have, on average, far HIGHER health ratings than restaurants.

Of course there are lots of reasons for this:

Usually the truck operator is the owner, so there’s pride of place; owners keep clean a lot better, usually, than employees who are not vested in the success of the business. Second, of course, it’s a smaller area to keep clean, and it can be as visible or more visible than the kitchen in a restaurant. Third, obviously, roaches, mice, rats etc. are not nearly as common in a mobile vehicle as they are in a restaurant with a nasty alley full of dumpsters and trash. So – those of you who are scared of taco trucks, there’s really no reason to be. I find that some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in California is from these trucks, from tiny farm communities in the central valley to those serving folks outside of clubs. Here in Sacramento we’re lucky enough to have three great trucks in one particular neighborhood, and they often have lines of people – Latin, white, African-American, Asian – outside every night until midnight, they’re that good!
