Zillions and Zillions
One of my new favorite sites, View from a Loft, reports on the signage at Carnitas Michocan which reads “Over 5 Zillion sold”. I don’t doubt it, those are some fine tacos, although by this math I would think King Taco has sold over 4 Gajillion by now.

Pink Taco to Open in Century City
Eater LA clues us into something pretty hilarious– Pink Taco, a gussied-up Mexican resto from the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas is coming to the Century City Mall. Owner Harry Morton had this to say “The building will be pink and more risque in the decor. It’s going to be a little rawer. It’s a little funkier. We really focused on staying true to the East LA vibe.” Apparently the East LA vibe is now brought to you in a pink theme restaurant in the Century City Mall with $10 tacos and Cadillac Margaritas.

NYC Taco Truck Mania
The New York Times, like every other media outlet worth its salt is interested in taco culture. Their most recent foray into the taco lifestyle is a profile of an NYC taco truck that operates up on 96th st. New York’s taco writers leave a lot to be desired, as soon as our New York edition launches, we’ll help steer them in the right direction.

Bandini Reviews Taco Celaya Truck
Our main man Bandini has a new review of a truck in Pico Union that I’ve seen but not tried as there are other spots nearby that I know better. He gives them 3.5 tacos, go check the review for details.

[...] a novel and attention-getting approach, as viral marketing goes– as we reported last month, Pink Taco is opening in Century City at the mall there. But, the whole idea of a slightly stained rubber fist [...]

    Hi there,

I created the Pink Taco restaurant & bar concept and opened the original in May 1998 — a year before the Mortons opened their first.

The controversy and community response to their version is tame compared to what I faced in ultra-conservative Manhattan, Kansas. We had aggressive picketers, petitioners, hate letters, anonymous threats, an onslaught of negative letters-to-the-editor, and police
    discrimination.

There were many stories in the local papers. The ABC affiliate out of Topeka came to Manhattan and did an on-site story that ran state-wide on the evening news, and the CBS affiliate invited us to join them in-studio for their half-hour morning show (which we declined since things were spiraling out of control).

I would do Internet searches at the time that would call up page after page of hits about me and my store. My Pink Taco dominated the regional news and spread nationwide through online postings and reprinted stories in towns across the country.

Anyway, I have written an article recounting the history of the original Pink Taco and the intense controversy it caused (complete with pictures and links to about a dozen of the news stories). You can read it on my blog if you’re interested:
