Interesting article, once we no longer feel the need to look at the world through ‘brown lenses’ and recognize the humanity in all we can perhaps move forward. Villaraigosa is a self-serving political huckster propelled into high office of public trust by the hopes of many peoples based on his promises yet he has turned his back on cause after cause, see the film “the Garden” wherein he promised to stand by the mostly poor latino gardeners from the South Central Community Gardens but once elected did nothing to save the largest garden in the USA. The disappointing thing for me is that to me he had an even greater burden to be an outstanding Mayor of the people because it was the poor and disenfranchised that put him in office. As for the Catholic Church, the St. Basil’s Building I think is incredibly beautiful, however no amount of style could cover the heinous, oppressive and in fact criminal behavior of the Catholic Church which has turned their back on the victims of clergy sexual abuse – Roger Mahony should be forced to cooperate, instead he spent 200 Million on a true monstrosity robbing programs for the poor for his own ego I joined the potests on the opening of the New Cathedral the ;Rodge Mahal’ and sadly it was my Chicano and Centro Americano / Latino bretheren who were bussed in by Mahony to COUNTER PROTEST in support of their own oppression!!! Chicanos are not powerless sheep we must all take account of where our true interests lie. Thanks for a provocative well written article.

Awesome story!!! Love your take on evolution rather than revolution. I believe it is just as powerful.
Used to live at a walking distance from the church, I regret I never set a foot in it. Loved the neighborhood, Koreatown is filled with interesting architecture, fascinating history and… taco trucks.
