Ulysses ~ Downtown

“Ulysses” – 1988
Alexander Lieberman (1912-1999)
Hope St. & 4th St
Lieberman was best known as the editorial director for Conde Nast magazines for more than 30 years. He fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution and left Europe for New York during World War II. Beginning his editorial career at Vogue in 1941, he published essays by art critics and included features on important modern artists such as Giacometti, Matisse, Braque, and Duchamp. By utilizing 20th century art as backdrops for fashion shoots, he subtly introduced the modern aesthetic into the pages of his magazine – and hence, into the minds of its readers.
