I Learned it by Watching You ~ Crewest Gallery

September 6th 2008 7pm
Crewest Gallery Presents
Syndrome
“I Learned It By Watching You”
An observation of the effects of mass media on the public. The show’s name was inspired by a popular, Reagan era PSA that aired on American television during the late 1980s. The concept behind each piece of art will range from playful satire to intense realism; each representing a different take on the influence media has on our lives and opinions. The execution is an intricate mixed media process bridging traditional art forms with digital tools.
About Syndrome:
Syndrome-comprised of artists Micah Hancock, James Larese and Mars Sandoval-began as an LA-based art collective showing in galleries in NYC and LA. Syndrome then went on to start a creative boutique under the same name. They now specialize in live-action directing for commercials, music videos and broadcast.
Music by: DJ DAZ (Umoja Soundsystem, Los Angeles)

Reproduce & Revolt

Reproduce & Revolt is the kind of book that will pay for itself ten times over. It’s a kind of art tool box for activists who need help designing protest signs or fliers. As they say “Creative, effective designs are one critical one critical way to communicate our messages of social injustice.”
Published by soft skull press and edited by Josh MacPhee and Favianna Rodriguez, R&V features more than 500 posters, stencils and prints dealing with topics such as animal cruelty, immigration, war/peace, inspiration, transportation, the environment and many more all to be freely used without any copyright infringement.

Readers can use designs found in the book to create posters, signs and fliers to spread the word about social injustice and to help them attract more attention with captivating visual designs. With artist from all over the world including Chris Stain, Juan R, Fuentes, Eric Drooker, Rini Templeton, Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vaca and many more. Also included in R&V is some background history of the “reproducible political graphic” along with a step by step break down that guides readers in creating their own art or reproducing the art found in the book. The entire book is in English and Spanish which will make it more appealing and available to a diverse crowd. The art work included also ranges from the serious to comical depending on the topic, artist and nature of the art. R&V also includes guidelines on how to use the graphics if readers plan to alter them or use them to promote an event or sale. For that reason there is an index in the back of the book with the contact information for every artist featured in R&V.
