The Site UnScene (TSUS*) represent the next generation of Los Angeles art management and curation. Founders JB Jones and Wil Atkinson have taken a different approach to the art world, truly putting the promotion and development of artists ahead of any other goal. To that end, the team is announcing their downtown headquarters, a warehouse style gallery where collectors of every type (from sticker fans to print buyers to serious art collectors) can come check out work by artists such as Septerhed, Destroy All Design, Gregory Siff and others. A unique aspect of the space is a 24 hour “artists gym” where artists can come work and create or have a session on the indoor skateramp. Both the gym and the gallery are available by appointment only but don’t be intimidated, everyone is invited to stop by as long as you call or email first.

Despite ads on MTA buses, a story in the LA Times, and some local news coverage, most people in LA don’t know that the city has brokered a deal to save you up to 40% on prescription drugs. Simply print out or download this card, and use it in retail pharmacies citywide (about 1,500 total). You’ll save money on various prescription drugs thanks to the deal brokered by Mayor Villaraigosa in 2009, fulfilling a campaign promises. Do you use LARx? Let us know in the comments.
You may use your savings card any time. There are no restrictions and no limits on how many times you may use your card.

For Everyone

Our card is available for use by you, your family, and your friends. If you do not have insurance that covers prescriptions, this card may save you dollars on all your prescription needs. And even if you have a prescription card through your medical insurance plan, you can use this savings card for prescriptions not covered by your current carrier to help save you money.

Thanks to Reddit LA for letting us know about this.

City Attorney Carmen “Nuch” Trutanich promised when running for City Attorney that he would not seek political office while working for the city. In fact, he signed a very specific pledge with repercussions if the contract with voters was broken. Here’s what he signed a couple of years ago when running against Jack Weiss:

We pledge that we will not seek any other elected position including Mayor, U.S. Congress, Attorney General or Los Angeles County District Attorney while serving as Los Angeles City Attorney. By signing this pledge, candidates also agree to a penalty should they violate the terms and conditions outlined above. Such penalty will be a $100,000 fine payable from personal funds to LA’s Best After School Program.

In addition, violators agree to personally finance one (1) full-page newspaper advertisement in every daily newspaper in Los Angeles to be run on the first Sunday following the breach of this contract. Such ad must include a large headshot of the candidate in question, a copy of this pledge and the words, “I AM A LIAR”, in large block print.

It’s now been a few months since Trutanich announced he is running for District Attorney, but no donation to an LA Afterschool program has been announced, and the daily newspapers are still waiting for that full-page ad. In case the issue is finding a graphic designer, we’ve graciously included a version above that could be used, for a nominal fee, by the Trutanich for D.A. team.

The campaign of Alan Jackson, who is running against Trutanich, is trying to get the word out about the broken pledge, but it appears not many people are listening other than the blog LA Dragnet which some in that blog’s comments have suggested is run by Alan’s campaign anyway.

Tuesday, November 1st was a momentous night for the Los Angeles Dodgers and LA sports in general. After two years of disastrous divorce proceedings and revelations that he and his wife had treated the team as their private ATM machine, McCourt and Major League Baseball have announced that the team will be sold at auction. The Times’ Bill Shaikin has been on the case from the beginning, and broke the big story last night. An excerpt:

“The Los Angeles Dodgers and Major League Baseball announced that they have agreed today to a court-supervised process to sell the team and its attendant media rights in a manner designed to realize maximum value for the Dodgers and their owner, Frank McCourt. The Blackstone Group LP will manage the sale process,” the statement read in its entirety.

Baseball hopes a new Dodgers owner can be in place by opening day next year.

The deal was concluded at about 8:30 p.m. Pacific time, said a person familiar with the discussions but not authorized to talk about them. McCourt, who was in New York for the negotiations, is expected to meet with reporters in Los Angeles at a later date.

There is no guarantee that the new Dodgers’ owners will be bring the team more wins than the McCourts, but there’s little doubt that they will be better owners. As long as things go smoothly, LA TACO promises never to mention the names Frank & Jamie McCourt ever again.

LA’s Saber has been at the forefront of artistic political activism in 2011, bombing the sky for #ArtisNotaCrime, smashing the Fox News twitter timeline, and now creating the ultimate in usable art agitation, a giant American flag that can be broken up into individual protest signs. Check out more of the behind the scenes and see the “making of” video on Saber’s website.

One thread that ties this latest piece of art to Saber’s past is the fake “controversy” Fox News drummed up against SABER a couple of years ago because of his American Flag series (print seen below). FOX tried to say that SABER was disrespecting America by “painting on the flag”. There’s no doubt the people over at Fox aren’t fans of the new flag either. You can visit it in person by checking out Occupy LA down at City Hall.

“Guess where I’m at??? It never ends”

That’s what @Lamudercop tweeted in the early morning on October 11th. Sal La Barbera, according to his google and twitter profiles, is a supervisor for the Criminal Gang/Homicide Division. Hes been with LAPD for 30 years, 24 of those with CGHD and is the current Squad Leader of FBI/LAPD SOS ll Homicide Task Force. A New York transplant, he’s also provided consulting to writers and film makers throughout Hollywood and appears on television regularly.

Everyone knows the life of a murder cop is tough, and no one expects them to be cuddly, but I’m baffled as to why he would tweet a picture of a recently deceased person lying on the street and not show even a shred of compassion for the person or their family. On the job, cynicism is to be expected, but the world of social media changes things as it becomes public.

From reading the twitter timeline, the picture is of the corpse of a murder victim somewhere near 106th and Wilmington. When I saw the picture and the caption La Barbera wrote, the first thing that came into my mind was “fuck the police”. Actually, “FUCK DA MUTHA FUCKING POLICE!!!” is probably more accurate.

It’s one thing for media to ignore a death in a poor neighborhood and spend 30 minutes on the Michael Jackson trial, they’re idiotic like that and we don’t pay their salaries. But when an officer, no less a supervisor with 30 years on the force uses twitter to make light of someone’s tragedy, it makes me angry. It’s not just the coldness, it’s the double standard. You would never see a cop post shit like that on the Seal Beach massacre because people would be all over them and someone would get fired, reassigned, or reprimanded within days.

Social media is a two way street and can be a powerful thing when used correctly. The detective can tweet all the pics of food, friends and the things on the job he sees as he pleases, but in my opinion this crosses the line. It’s disrespectful to the community he’s supposed to be “protecting and serving”. I’m pretty sure that Sal or someone over at the LAPD is going see this and possibly take some sort of action against me. Maybe I’ll end up as one of his tweets. Who knows, but you can be sure I’ll tweet that shit right back. And that’s the power of social media.
