Veteran Workshop: “Combat Paper: Uniforms into Handmade Paper”

Combat Paper Workshop explores the experiences of military veterans in recent wars through printmaking. The project began in 2007 as a series of workshops by veteran Drew Cameron and artist Drew Matott as a way for returning soldiers to share experiences through art. In the workshops veterans typically cut up their battle fatigues, beat them into pulp, and press the pulp into paper that is then used as a ground for printing. The artist-veterans’ images reflect the intensity, conflicting emotions, and indelible memories of war.
Combat Paper Project: Uniforms into Handmade Paper

For five years Combat Paper has used the traditional hand papermaking process to facilitate inter-generational workshops with veterans, family, and members of the community. The uniforms that were once worn in service are transformed into handmade paper, prints and artwork. In this way, there is a shared understanding, dialogue and commemoration between veterans and the communities in which they live. This hands-on workshop will teach the entire process of how to transform your own clothing into paper art.
Participants are encouraged to bring in items of clothing or fabric, including military uniforms, which they would like to transform into paper. The instructor, artist Drew Cameron, will also provide fibers so bringing material is not a requirement to attend. In addition, any photographs, letters or materials from their service may also be brought along for inspiration.
This workshop is FREE for veterans and their families.
Garvey Ranch Park ~ Monterey Park
Following the Civil War, an Italian, Alessandro Repetto, purchased 5,000 acres (20 km2) of the rancho and built his ranch house on the hill overlooking his land, about a half-mile north of where Garfield Avenue crosses the Pomona Freeway, not far from where the Edison substation is now located on Garfield Avenue.
It was at this time, Richard Garvey, a mail rider for the U.S. Army whose route took him through Monterey Pass, a trail that is now Garvey Avenue, settled down in the King’s Hills. Garvey began developing the land by bringing in spring water from near the Hondo River and by constructing a 54-foot-high (16 m) dam to form Garvey Lake located where Garvey Ranch Park is now. To pay for his development and past debts, Garvey began selling portions of his property. In 1906, the first subdivision in the area, Ramona Acres (named after the developer’s daughter, who would also later inspire the title of the novel Ramona), was developed north of Garvey and east of Garfield Avenues.
