Spokes & Words Back To School Ride ~ East L.A.

With summer at an end and school starting up again for students, this ride is dedicated against all the bullshit everyone has to put up with in the institutionalized educational system. After all, all we wanted was a Pepsi.

Join up with the Spokes & Words riders as we share poetry, words and stories at Self Help Graphics, Cal State L.A., East L.A. College, Salazar Park ending the ride at Corazon del Pueblo.

Meet up at Maricahi Plaza on First and Boyle at 6:30 and ride out at 7 p.m. this Thursday

Make sure you also “like”" the official Spokes & Words facebook page to stay up to date on rides and connect with fellow riders.

TO ALL PARTICIPANTS, MAKE SURE YOUR BIKE IS IN WORKING ORDER. MAKE SURE TO BRING EXTRA INNER TUBES, TOOLS ETC. IN CASE ANYTHING HAPPENS. THE LAW REQUIRES ALL BIKES RIDERS TO HAVE BOTH BACK AND FRONT LIGHTS AND ANYONE UNDER 18 TO WEAR A HELMET.

ON THE DAY OF THE RIDE WE WILL QUICKLY GO OVER THE RULES OF THE ROAD FOR SAFETY REASONS. HERE IS A QUICK LINK

Here is the google maps link to the bike route

August is Immigrant Pride Month ~ Los Angeles

The city of Los Angeles approved a resolution to declare August as Immigrant Pride Month as a counter to Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 that gives law enforcement the power to questions one’s legal status.

“This is a city that celebrates all people wherever they come from,” said Councilman Jose Huizar, one of the author’s of the proposal. “No one should be held to a higher standard simply because of characteristics someone may think they have that is different from the norm, whatever that norm may be. That norm is very diverse, it comes in different colors, different flavors, and so, we hope this law is struck down.”

Although this only applies to August 2010, it is clear the city of Los Angeles is trying to celebrate its diverse roots, even though it still does some business with Arizona;  working with an Arizona-based company that has the dubious distinction of operating our red light cameras at intersections and a lesser evil, SuperShuttle.

Overcoming Barriers ~ Long Beach

Overcoming Barriers ~ 1996 S.Y.E.T.P. Mural Project ~ Alex “Man One” Poli ~ 1800 Fashion Ave. ~ Long Beach

“Overcoming Barriers” speaks visually of the needs and reasons people immigrate to the U.S.A. The United States, a nation founded by immigrants, has always been the promised land of hopes, dreams and opportunities. Many immigrants face barriers and negative stereotypes. “Overcoming Barriers” depicts ways immigrants break down barriers by their positive contributions to the economy, society and environment.

Hollywood Walk Of Fame 50th Anniversary ~ Hollywood

Hollywood Walk Of Fame’s 50th Anniversary festival is coming up and promises to be filled with entertainment and festivities from 11am to 6pm.  Although I have a feeling none of the old street performers and characters will be invited since they’ve already been shooed off the Walk.  Who knows, maybe they’ll be able to make a cameo and actually bring some lighthearted laughs back to the street.

From the official website:

Drawing inspiration from these visitors, the next milestone in the year-long celebration of the Walk of Fame is the “Walk the Walk” community festival on Sunday, July 25.  From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. there will be free entertainment and activities throughout Hollywood honoring the five categories of the Walk of Fame – Motion Picture, Television, Radio, Recording and Live Theatre.  There are four anchor locations for the celebration – Hollywood & Highland Center and the TV Guide Studio located there, the Egyptian Theatre, Capitol Records building and the Montalban Theatre.  Beyond these four, businesses and attractions throughout the area are joining in the festival creating their own specials honoring the 50th Anniversary of the Walk of Fame.  More information can be found in the Community Festival section which will be updated regularly including a schedule of entertainment and events and listings for participating businesses.

LA River declared ‘traditional navigable waters’ ~ Los Angeles

The EPA officially declared the entire LA River ‘traditional navigable waters’ leading the way for the 51 mile urban watershed to be protected under the Clean Water Act.

“We’re moving away from the concrete,” said U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.  “This is a watershed as important as any other.  So we are going to build a federal partnership to empower communities .… We want the L.A. River to demonstrate how urban waterways across the country can serve as assets in building stronger neighborhoods, attracting new businesses and creating new jobs.”

Although various groups looking forward to this declaration are thrilled, many who know the LA River well and live nearby and/or around it may have other thoughts.
