From the Los Angeles Times:
Five children and three adults were shot Wednesday afternoon by a gunman who opened fire at a busy South Los Angeles bus stop minutes after classes were dismissed at a nearby school.
In a scene of chaos that authorities were still trying to piece together, witnesses described a gunman who seemingly appeared from nowhere and began spraying the crowd indiscriminately. As bystanders dived to the ground, some adults swept up children from the path of gunfire.

The AP has the updated story:
A singer and two members of his staff were found tortured and killed just south of the California border, apparently the latest victims in a string of slayings of Mexican musicians, state prosecutors said Wednesday. Jesus Rey David Alfaro Pulido, 26, known as “El Gallito,” was found strangled and shot in the head last week in Tijuana, said a spokeswoman for the Baja California attorney general’s office who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter. His body was apparently frozen, the spokeswoman said.
Reports had first emerged of the deaths of Alfaro, manager Israel Flores, and his assistant, Jose Guadalupe Topete on Friday. Prosecutors confirmed the deaths on Wednesday. The killings may have been linked to three others in Tijuana last week, including that of a municipal police officer, the attorney general’s office said in a statement.
Many of the bodies bore signs of torture and were left with written notes common in execution-style killings. No arrests have been made in the killings. Alfaro was the latest Mexican musician killed in a string of murders that include the December death of Sergio Gomez, lead performer for the top-selling group K-Paz de la Sierra, and the November 2006 slaying of Valentin Elizalde.

Today’s must-read news item of the day comes to use from beautiful downtown Fontana:
An armed robber who sneaked up on a bicyclist Sunday night didn’t want the man’s money, wallet or anything else of great value.
He wanted tacos. The victim, a 35-year-old Fontana man, had just bought about $20 in tacos from a stand at San Bernardino and Fontana avenues and was riding home when the bandit confronted him.
“He approached him from behind, saying, `Give me your tacos,”‘ said police Sgt. Jeff Decker. “He grabbed the bag of tacos, punched him in the face and began to flee.”
The victim demanded his tacos back when they were taken. “The suspect then pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at the victim”
Kids, we know that the taco lifestyle sometimes gets people excited, and that being low on cash can drive some to desperation. But violence like this, even for a monster sack of delicious carnitas tacos, is never acceptable. The thief has been described as a “25- to 30-year-old man, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 190 pounds with brown hair and eyes and a very long mustache”.

In what’s being called a horrible tragedy, 5 people have been killed in a violent stand-off in the Valley. According to the AP:
A man barricaded himself in a house after telling police he had killed three relatives, then opened fire on a SWAT team Thursday. Five people, including an officer and the gunman, were killed, police said.
The standoff began about 9 p.m. Wednesday night in a house in the San Fernando Valley. Nearly six hours later, police lobbed tear gas into the home and hit it repeatedly with a battering ram. Less than 90 minutes later, the house could be seen on fire.
Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell said police soon exchanged gunfire with the suspect again and he went down. The suspect was taken into custody and pronounced dead on the scene, McDonnell said.
