Medical Marijuana Dispensary Deadline ~ Los Angeles

A while back we talked here on LA Taco about the new Medical Marijuana ordinance that would should shut down most shops. Now the deadline is here for more than 400 Medical Marijuana Dispensaries to close as ordered by the city. Although the LAPD has acknowledge that it would wait to see who complies before breaking any doors down, the penalties are as high as $2,500 per day and as ridiculous as jail time.
This is just the beginning. Although last-minute legal challenges were thrown out of court, you can bet there will be many lawsuits to come.
And don’t forget we vote on the Tax, Regulate and Control Cannabis Act of 2010 on November 2nd. Do your homework and make an informed decision.
A look at the map of dispensaries ordered to close via the LA Times.

Roy Choi is Down ~ Los Angeles
The New York Times published an article today exploring the relationship between marijuana and food, an intersection that many TACO readers have found themselves idling at from time to time.
Roy Choi, who owns the fleet of Kogi Korean taco trucks in Los Angeles, likens the culinary culture that has grown up around marijuana to the one that rose up around the Grateful Dead years ago. Then, people who attended the band’s shows got high and shared live music. Now, people get high and share delicious, inventive and accessible food.
“It’s good music, maybe a little weed and really good times and great food that makes you feel good,” he said.
“We’re not like Cypress Hill,” Mr. Choi said, referring to a rap group known for being outspoken advocates of pot use. “It’s not like a campaign to make food out of hemp, but it is a culture. It’s a vibe we have.”
Mr. Choi, who recently opened his first restaurant, Chego!, said he uses marijuana to keep his creativity up and to squeeze in quick breaks in the midst of 17-hour workdays.
“In the middle of a busy day, I’ll smoke,” he said. “Then I’ll go to the record store and hang out and clear my mind or pop into a matinee movie and then come back to the streets.”
Roy’s new spot is Chego on Overland in West LA near the 10 Freeway. Maybe when he finally takes some time off, he can write a nug report for TACO.

420 at 137 Sez City Council ~ Los Angeles

black rhino kush
While the issue is probably not settled, the latest in the city’s confusing attempt to regulate Medical Marijuana Dispensaries has arrived at a number: 137. That is the number of clinics they will allow to stay open under their new regulations. LA NOW has more:
Seeking to bring the city’s medical marijuana dispensary boom under tight control, the Los Angeles City Council decided today to cap the total number at 70, but to allow those that originally registered with the city to remain open.
Under the city’s 2007 moratorium on new dispensaries, 186 registered with the city. Officials believe at least 137 of those remain open in their original locations. Under the motion adopted this afternoon, those dispensaries could stay open but could be required to move to comply with the ordinance’s restrictions on where they may locate.
Councilman Jose Huizar proposed a cap to ensure that dispensaries would not be concentrated in any one neighborhood. Currently, with no ordinance in place to control their location, dispensaries have clustered in some neighborhoods, such as Eagle Rock, Hollywood and Woodland Hills, drawn by empty storefronts or by proximity to night life.
