Tune of the Day: “Orion” by Motions

11:31 AM PDT on April 28, 2014

Certain people save their best and most rare t-shirts for special events, and walking around Coachella a couple weekends ago there was one record label t-shirt that kept popping up; even if it was only a handful of people in a crowd of 100,000 it caught my eye every time-- the instant classic Body High logo t. Those shirts instantly sell out whenever a new run is announced, the reason being that LA-based Body High manages to be both a cult label and a friendly, welcoming home to anyone who truly cares about the music.

Some of the coolest and most interesting house music of last year was made by Grown Folk, a Canadian duo that went heavy on the atmosphere but always with a throbbing, unstoppable beat. Tomorrow, Body High releases an EP from one-half of Grown Folk, Brendan Neal. The project is called Motions, and it picks up where Grown Folk left off, with lots of multi-textured rhythms, big bass, and a dark undercurrent of heavy emotion and yearning. The liner notes say "the record stands out not only as a peak time club moment but also as headphone masterpiece; as rich and textured as it is banging", which is a really good description. Listen to "Orion" in your headphones above to see what they're talking about...
