Someone in Sonora, Mexico Already Made a Corrido In Honor of Ukrainian Soldiers

3:12 PM PST on February 25, 2022

It was only a matter of time until Mexico's thriving artists in the corrido space caught on with the current crisis unfolding in Ukraine as it bravely defends its country against Russia. Early yesterday, 19-year-old Marco Granillo of Hermosillo, Sonora, uploaded a minute-long clip of his 'Corrido Ucranisa vs. Rusisa' corrido on TikTok, which quickly became viral among Mexicans and Mexican Americans on the platform for the sheer speed of how long it took someone to write a song about the historic global conflict. This was about 24 hours after the news of the Russian invasion broke.

It eventually made it on Ed's Manifesto's feed on Instagram a few hours later.  And just like that, the war on the other side of the world became immortalized in Mexican corrido folklore. The guitar strumming in the background is ominous and gets a little darker as it gets into the chorus.

Cuando menos se esperas, llegan sin tener aviso  (When they least expected, they arrived without notice.)

All the armored commanders came from Russia, just out for some territories)

"Lo hice con todo el respeto," (I made the song with all due respect), Granillo tells L.A. TACO.

He has been singing for three years now and says that he felt it in his heart to write a song to honor the country as it goes through war. "Every family there deserves peace and blessings, and I hope the conflict ends very soon," Granillo says. He says that he is working to release his full song on his TikTok tonight at about 8pm PST.

Comments have mostly been positive by fans of the corrido genre, commenting the kind of supportive chants you would hear aimed towards Mexican states and cities while a song representative of that region is playing—except they weren't saying ¡Arriba Sinaloa! They were in support of Ukraine. @Gudino_Antonio commented, "Pura Ukranisa viejon. (The memes and corridos are faster than even the news nowadays.)

Here is part of the lyrics for Granillo's 'Corrido Ucranisa vs. Rusisa' corrido masterpiece that he shared with L.A. TACO.

L.A. TACO will upload the full song once it is available.
