Update: More Than Four Million Free Meals Have Been Served by Lausd Since Closures, Which Is Staggering

Taco has confirmed that starting Wednesday, 60 schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be serving free meals to students from the hours of 7 to 10 AM.

The news comes on the first day that all students in the district have been asked to stay home to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The meals will be available via “Grab & Go Food Centers” at the following schools. The details are being sorted out but our source at LAUSD confirms that there will either be a curbside pickup option or there will be signs posted around the school informing where to pick up the food in-person.

More than 8,500 students in LAUSD are in the foster care system. Another 19,000 are homeless. 80 percent of students that attend LAUSD qualify for free or reduced-cost meals. In a district, that is made up of 650,000 students (more than 700,000 if you include charter schools and pre-school), this access to food may mean the difference between someone having at least one full hot meal a day or not.

For now, only breakfast will be served, but the school may implement a second meal slot soon. Check their website for more updates.

Here is the complete list of schools that will be providing free food for students.

Update on April 3, 2020:

A recent report from LAUSD has revealed that more than four million meals have been served to students since the closure of the district on March 18. “In the success is a warning sign,” Superintendent Austin Beutner said. “The need in our community is large and growing as the coronavirus impacts the families we serve, many of whom were struggling to get by before the recent, unprecedented layoffs began to be felt. We are providing help where it is needed.”
