Art Fight ~ Los Angeles

Precious on the Left, Hirst on the Right

Everyone from Michael Silverblatt who says it’s about context, to Jonathan Lethem who says Hirst is ‘lame’ have weighed in on the alleged theft by Damian Hirst of the signature style of local LA artist Lori Precious. Hirst’s latest works use animals as he has before, in this case butterflies in the shape of rose or arched cathedral windows. Precious has been doing more-or-less the same thing for 10 years (see the picture above). The whole tempest began at LA master art blog Supertouch in the comments section to a preview post of Hirst’s LA show at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. It seems unlikely that Hirst will care about Precious’ protests, but it’s also understandable that she’d want to get some attention for her own work.

and now taco gets a new comment. Its rad!!!!!! Publish or persish, as they say in acadamia. I take back the think I said abour MATT GLEASON. maybe he googles his own name. MAtt Gleason is a well respected name in the art world, mostly because art student read his zine and wonder if they should drop out of school – or at least change majors.

Learn to draw kids, or you will end up like Hirst – a cynical death monger on the brink of the void.

Mat spells his name with one T. I can also vouch for Mat not having the time to Google his own name. He’s too busy for all that. And despite his own drop-out rate, and his influence upon others to possibly drop out of art school too, he’s as knowledgeable as anyone in academia.

PS: He did not pay me to write this. I just felt like it.

Nice to see you in the LA territory, Zipthwung. Hope you had fun taking a sun tan, or whatever people do when they come to visit here.
