Jadis

2701 Main St. ~ Santa Monica

If Los Angeles is as weird as we think, Jadis might be one of its weirdest stores. Straight from a sci-fi flick come hair-raising electro-magnetic machines, anatomically correct skeletons, and even passable brain matter. Giant radios and unwieldy measuring equipment fill this mad-scientist's lab that is only open to the public every Sunday from 12-4.

The rest of the time, it's private clients who want to rent some esoteric machinery for a movie, or a weird collector who simply cannot live without a scale six times the size of his house, who comes by. Despite the $1 entrance fee, a Sunday drive to Jadis is worth it. You won't find anyhing you actually want to buy unless you're a passionate DP with his eyes on an ancient lens.

Still, connecting to a split-second of electronic history might put our current times of fly-by-the-minute technology in the type of perspective that makes you appreciate the luxury of the 'aughts.
