    fucking…what the fuck!

luna thanks for the link, interesting how an anonymous commenter says he paid for the placement… it seems unlikely, the cost of paying for it in one location is maybe doable, but in 10?

    Erich-
I’ve been getting mad hits on my Skullphone posts from the Daktronics (Digital Signs) & Clear Channel networks. Wouldn’t be surprised if my Anon commenter was affiliated with one of these companies.

I was waiting for the green light right off of the 90 freeway just an hour ago and guess what I saw on the digital billboard? I was able to take a pic right before the light turned to green.

From the Clear Channel media kit:

“Each network will be sold for $97,000 for 1 spot / per display on all 10 digital
    structures per 4-week period.”

Thats $97,000 to go up on 10 billboards, doubt he paid

both those are on olympic. missed em

  13. Gravatar

Well, you are all wrong. This was a paid program. Sorry to inform you, but your “hacker” bought the space on 10 boards from Clear Channel.

Billboard companies always have remnant space, and rate card is just a bunch of numbers, you’d have to be a fool to pay it.

Still, it seems unlikely that CC would want to run these ads even if they were getting paid 1/10th of ratecard, what would be the benefit to them?

local blog curbed LA says it wasn’t a hack at all, although they don’t have any evidence, only an unnamed source: http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/03/billboard_hack.php

These spots were PAID for, not hacked. Although there might have been some sort of artist subsidy or sponsorship to get the snippets up there.

Also, Jenny Holzer already did this back in 1982 on the electronic billboards in Time Square. It was the same material she was wheatpasting on telephone booths that year:

It was quality regardless of how it was done.
