Vintage Skateboarding ~ West LA
The video above features the legendary skaters of the original Makaha Skateboard club. I contacted Danny Bearer, one of the team members, and also the first World Skateboard Champ among many other accomplishments, who has this to say:
This is an old vid of the Makaha Skateboard Club. We have the first five members of the Skateboard Hall of Fame. Squeak Blank, Jon Freis, Torger True Johnson, yours truly, Bruce Logan and also the one and only Tony Alva the sixth member, inducted in Canada 1996. We all still ride and we have four signature models, Woody Woodward, Danny Bearer, Bruce Logan and Greg Carroll. See Makahaskateboards.com for more info! Our leader is David Michael Rochlan Jr. He, along with Larry, is responsible for making the skateboard club. Makaha is like the New York Yankees Baseball Club.
The spots seen in the video are: Bonzai Pipeline (Marquez Knolls Elementary School), Malibu (Brentwood Elementary School), Waimea Bay (Beligio Elementary School) and Sunset Beach is (Paul Revere Middle school) These are the roots schools for skateboarding in Los Angeles!
Danny also wants us to know:
The Makaha Skateboard Club does not smoke Cannibus Sativa, Mary Jane or in other words Loco Weed! True Love is enduring, patience, kind, not puffed up, not boastful, true love endures all things! Thanks, Danny. Keep in mind all that the Lords of Dogtown are something like 5-10 years younger then these pioneers. If you get a chance to skate the schools in question, keep in mind and spirit the dudes who were there first, back on clay wheels!

They formed Los Angeles Designcraft Inc. on 1977 Sepulvida Boulevard by the railroad tracks. Daniel’s first job was cllecting bottles at State Beach at the mouth of the Santa Monica Canyon. Next he learned to play poker on Bel Aire beach to the north of the Canyon. At the end of my first summer, at the age of twelve the Bank of America took my account at a whooping thousand dollars ! He was good at all the sports, but his favorite two were skatboarding ans surfing. Then by a stoke of good luck he met Jon and David Rochlan Jr. And they liked me so they picked me so they picked me up and drove him to the hottest skateboarding banks all over town. David had just started a club : Makaha Skateboard Club for Richard L. Stevenson the founder of Surf Guide Magazine and Larry began manufacturing skateboards.This was the first Club of skateboarders backed by a major company.

Often one could find him lingering about the blue green see-through water dangling his toes over the front of the surfboard during the earliy glassy mornings of the day. The bottom of the ocean was so clear that it was not difficult to make out abalone seafood as well as starfish. Princess Chondrea your smile beams like sunshine on a gulls wing…and the birds cease to sing when you raise…and the leaves dance and play after you take my hand and hold as a flower…take care with my heart for it’s made of glass….your eyes feel like silence resting on me….ride easy your fairy stallion….you have mounted take care of your flight, my precious, he might not know…….. !

In 1968 Richard Wilken Surfboard Company sponsored a Senior Division Championship at Sunset Point in Los Angeles County. Danny partisipated in his first Senior Divion First prize! In 1970 at Malibu Invitatioal Classic he placed fifth in front of the older Hawaiian surfer Donald Takayama. At the Malibu Interclub Surf Championships he placed First,making this Danny’s secund Senior Division Championship. Danny won seven surfing championships total in the Junior Division and two Senior Divison Championship first prizes all,on Hobie Surfboards shaped by Phil Edwards, Ralph Parker, and Mickey Munoz. This was the same year he earned acceptance to the prestigious University of California at Santa Barbara as a pre-medicine student.

The items were all supplied upon demand with great generosity from Hobie Alter, Larry Stevenson from Makaha Skateboard Club,Barron Hilton, and Vita Pakt Orange Juice Company. Hobie Developed the first surfboard and skateboard shop on the West Coast in California. There he sold custom shaped boards and earned his first million dollars. The Hobie Alter Surfing and Skating Team would come to dominate surfing for ten years straight. After the Hobie Club won the first International Skateboard Championships in the spring of 1965 the club took off on a nationwide tour. Woody Woodward, Torger True Johnson, and Steven Hilton took the central states while John Freis, David Hilton and Daniel Bearer took New England through the southern states. The campaign ended in Houston, Texas at the Shamrock Hilton Hotel, the same place where Danny had landed as the First National Skateboard Artist of 1964. In New York City, the two-part Club joined together at the New York Hilton. The first half of the team or club flew home, while David, John, and Daniel toured Massachusetts, Delaware, Rhode Island,Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC. With the air temperature at 98 degrees and humidity at 100%, the team further toured North and South Carolina, the Peach State of Georgia,Florida, and Cypress Gardens where they rode the wake of a Navy Vessel in this large lake in the middle of the state, Arkansas, Alabama,Louisiana, Texas. This first campaign featured the new Hobie Fiberflex Skateboard along with the two nine-piece Hardwood 28″ and the 30″ Hobie Classics !!! The tour ended with a rewarding vacation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the south shore of Oahu at Waikiki Beach one of the Islands. All the guys surfed Kaiser’s Bowl, Number Three’s and Ala Moana everyday. There they met World Surfing Champion and Senator Fred Hemmings doing reverse stance surfing maneuvers like a Football Fullback Bull.

John Freis turned out to be the Grand-prize winner at the First International Skateboard Championships at La Palma Stadium in the City of Anaheim in the County of Orange, California, The United States of America which had over 280 competitors from all over the world. He was also the one of two Danny could not catch up to on the steep high-spreed cross-country runs through Brentwood in Los Angeles County along with Woody Woodward. Woody Woodward, the youngest member of the Makaha and Hobie Skateboard Clubs,was the most radical. his head was completely shaved. He was born to be wild and lawless. He is incredible to watch as he out speeds the riders of both clubs. Danny was chosen the First International Champion with his victory in the first Event, the Flatland Slalom .Larry Stevenson was the first club owner to pay Danny $25 for doing a 360 degree turn on the Bullocks Depatment Store eighth floor making him the first money maker. Danny still has his first dollar he ever made!

THIS IS THE SURFING SPOT CALLED CANNON’S POINT, MAZATLAN,MEXICO ! AT CHRISTMAS TIME IT WAS EASY TO SEE SHIMMERING WALLS OF WATER STIMULATED FROM THE NORTHPOLE. THESE SWELLS,SPARKLED CREATED BY 120 MILE AN HOUR WIND THIS WIND GENERATED THE LARGEST SIZED WAVES THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA RECIEVES. JAMES PALMER IN MALIBU IS GROWING GRAPVINES AND BOTTLING WINE FOR THE WEDDING!

Bellagio Road Elementary School was not only located on the street Conrad Hilton lived on, but was also the WAIMAEA BAY of Skateboarding David and Steven’s grandfather’s home was located high on this road, and his back yard touched the Bel Aire Country Club golf course. Everyday after school when the team was not doing exihibions at shopping centers, they practiced on the heavies skill on this beautifully shaped, elliptically banked bowl ! Now there was Banzai Pipeline banks and Sunset Beach banks.Paul Revere Elementary and junior high and Marquez Elementary School slopes to hang Ten on !They resembled Hawaii !

Together they lived on the left bank of the river Seine in Paris.That summer was filled with many sensual memories in the then quiet city of Paris as most of the Parisians take their vacation and leave to the South of France.The weather was perfect and the sky clear. Daniel studied music and plays the guitar and the piano.This is ths student housing for all the countries in the world each having their own home for students studying at the Sorbonne.

The break was tropical, warm water and soothing. At one point on the journey home, the team bent a tie rod under the front of the truck and were stranded in a riverbed. The local natives came to their rescue and straightened the rod. With everyone pushing the truck through the dry riverbed, sixty seconds after they pushed to the top of the bed, a flash flood of water and mud came rushing down the river. 60 seconds from death !
