2010 Day of the Dead Guide to Events

Considering how I got a lot of positive feed back from last years impromptu Day of the Dead guide, I was debating whether or not to make another this year too. I mean, I do have a life beyond my random ramblings on this here bloggito. But then again, I love DOD and I love sharing the tradition and parties with as many people as I can. My homework will still be there after I finish. So here it is, your 2010 Dia de los Muertos guide to events you probably already know about and some you may have missed. Also, Day of the Dead is also election day. So, after you vote between a @#!*% and a turd, which I won't get into lest I be called childish names again, start making your way to Self Help Graphics for the original Dia de los Muertos celebration, going on its 37th year and it's free. Free !! You can also print and wear this kick @#!*% mask made by Cuéntame, the ¡Latino Instigators!, for a get out the vote campaign. I think it's hilarious because if you can vote and don't for whatever reason you have, then you are a cabron and you have no right to complain about how bad things are either. Also, most of these events are pretty self explanatory, soo I'm gonna cut corners and just copy and paste info with flyers and pics really. Anyway, enough jibba-jabber, on to the festivities

Join us this Friday 10/29/10 for the BH Farmer's Market Haunted House from 6:30-10 pm. “Better To Die On My Feet” explores a contemporary approach to memorial, celebrating the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead. The title is based on the proverb, “Better to die on my feet, than to live on my knees” by Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, urging us to stand up for what we believe, even if it means dying for it. This notion aims at memorializing the dead through the memory of them living with resistance and pride. The exhibition is comprised of artists from different regions in the U.S., working in a variety of mediums, including photography, installation, drawing, painting and performance.

Wild West(lake)? Join us for another Folk Art Walk! It begins at Mama’s Hot Tamales at 11:00am, a café and community hub. From there, we’ll explore the park and surroundings through the eyes of artist Carmen Argote, who grew up in the neighborhood, and artist/urban planner James Rojas, an expert in Latino Urbanism. The tour will focus on the history of the park, evolving cultural uses and expressions, notions of “the view” and what constitutes an idyllic landscape. Once notorious as the Wild West of Los Angeles, how has MacArthur Park changed in the life of the city and what’s happening there now? The tour will involve walking 1 mile round trip. Wear comfortable shoes. Tour is FREE.

Led by premier altar-maker and community resident, Ofelia Esparza and assisted by Xavier Esparza, Denise Esparza-Carrillo & Rosanna Esparza Ahrens, participants are invited to contribute their offerings to the community altar for display throughout our Día De Los Muertos festivities. This inspirational and important art of traditional altar making serves as a way for the community to share their memories with special tokens of remembrance. Gloria Alvarez and Ruben Funkahuatl Guevara will be sharing their poetry ofrendas to the Community Altar with us. Community members are encouraged to bring decorated copies of pictures of loved ones who have passed and Revolutionaries who have inspired them.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery 11th Annual Day of the Dead Celebration

Up until this point, I have pretty much copied and pasted all the info and events going on. Now, this may seem like I'm hatting on Hollywood Forever for adding commentary to the post, but I can't help it. I went last year and it was a great event, EXCEPT with a few hang ups that I have about it. Because this is at Hollywood and it's meant to introduce the DOD tradition to people who are not familiar with it, that's what I love about the event. However, they lose me on a few other things that not only don't go along with the tradition, but kinda disrespect it. I'm talking about their altar contest. DOD isn't a contest, even if first prize get's $3,000. It's about sharing and celebrating, by having a contest, to me, it cheapens the experience and tradition because it's not about who can decorate things better than someone else, it's about celebrating those who are no longer here for one night. I've gotten over the fact that it's $10 to get in and like another $20 to buy food for one person and that they charge $10 for parking, it's understandable that they spend money to make this event happen and need to break even, cool. But if they really wanna keep true to tradition, they should stop having the contest and maybe use that money for something else, like lowering the prize of admission and parking for attendees. If they fine tuned some of these things, the event would be 20 times better. With DOD growing more and more popular every year, it's only natural that some company would use the event as another excuse to throw some concert/event that makes more money than pay tribute to the celebrations. But hey, that's just me.

Leimert Park Art Walk

The Business/Art Incubator hosted by Ben Caldwell of KAOS Network is a collective of artists, residents and local merchants that have come together to develop the fifth Art Walk around the community drum circle in the Leimert Park Village along 43rd Place on Sunday, October 31st, 2 pm- 8 pm. Throughout the day cultural spaces (KAOS Network, Vision Theatre, World Theatre,and prolific arts), artist studios and storefronts will sh...are art exhibitions, music, fashion, food, drumming, spoken word and local shopping

The Last Sunday of each month The hub of Black culture in Los Angeles,Leimert Park Village, presents its monthly Art Walk from 2:00 pm til 8:00 pm. The art Walk features the works of local, national, and internationally known visual, graphic, video,literary, and entertainment artist. Visitors can stroll the Historic Leimert park Village with its quint galleries, gift shops, hair saloons, and the famous Vision Theater, who's striking 1950's architecture houses the main stage for a wide variety of music presentations from jazz to blues to today's positive hip- hop. The art walk highlights include a lineup of progressive pop offerings at the renown youth venue Kaos Network. Free feature, documentary, and cutting edge shorts are screened at the Cine Freestyle theater. Muertos De Risa: 80’s Vintage Day of the Dead Works From Self Help Graphics & Art’s Collection

A Dia de los Muertos print collector’s dream come true! Muertos de Risa is a unique opportunity to view and purchase rare prints in the Self Help Graphics & Art’s collection.

The selection of art includes, Esperanza, (1990), a large, marvelous and impeccable print by the late, multi-faceted artist Eduardo Oropeza. Oropeza’s work is very coveted by art lovers and the rarity of having an available print for sale makes it an incredible opportunity for collectors to acquire his work.

Included in the exhibition are other singular DOD themed works from the “70’s and 80’s by renowned Chicano and Mexicano artists John Valadez, Leo Limón and Alfredo de Batuc. These artists as well as many others were an integral part of the Chicano art movement that was nurtured from its beginnings at Self Help Graphics & Art.

Several rare pieces from the late seventies will also be available. These colorful, unsigned and unnumbered early DOD themed works are a testament of the unique historical significance of Self Help Graphics & Art and Dia de los Muertos, and offer the committed art collector a rare opportunity to share a piece of Chicano art history.

Forest Lawn will host its first annual Dia de los Muertos celebration at Forest Lawn-Covina Hills. On Tuesday, November 2, the Dia de los Muertos Mass will take place from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., followed by refreshments until 9:00 p.m.

MASS: (11/2: 7pm - 9pm)
The mass will feature an altar designed by Ofelia Esparza, and will take place in front of the world-famous Life of Christ mosaic, the largest religious mosaic in the Western Hemisphere. Presiding over the Mass will be a Catholic priest, Father Andrew Encinas. Guests are welcome to bring photos to display at the altar. In addition, flowers, candles, and mementos will be available for purchase.

After you vote on Tuesday and go about your day, THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE YOU NEED TO BE FOR DAY OF THE DEAD. Continuing a 37 year old tradition like no one else, all free and for the community. I had SOOO much fun last year, that I know this year will be the same. I'm gonna paint my face, dance cumbias, pay my respects to loved ones and make this another year to remember, celebrating life in all it's forms.

8th Annual Noche de Altares, a Dia de los Muertos Celebration

Expecting over 8,000 in attendance, the 8th Annual Noche de Altares will be the largest Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration in Orange County. The event will take place on Saturday, November 6th, 2010 from 1:00pm to 10:00pm on 4th Street, in the corazon of Santa Ana from Ross to Broadway. At the heart of the tradition, community members will construct over 75 altars. Participants are encouraged to build their altar in memory of a deceased loved one or to bring awareness to social issues. Registration to build an altar is free and open to the public.

Organized by non-profit organization El Centro Cultural de México and local business Calacas Inc., Noche de Altares is a free, family-friendly community event. Throughout the day there will be arts and crafts workshops, face painting, local artists selling their wares, and delicious food from local restaurants and vendors. There will also be live music and entertainment from local and international musicians and dance troupes.

CALAVERA FASHION SHOW & WALKING ALTARS

Tropico de Nopal Gallery-Art Space celebrates and honors Dia de los Muertos with its OFRENDAS 2010, an Altar-Installation Exhibition inside of the gallery and their Calavera Fashion Show & Walking Altars in their outdoor patio space.

The Altar-Installation Exhibition in the gallery (opening Nov 2) will include the work of renowned artist and "altarista" Ofelia Esparza, vet...eran Dia de los Muertos artist-curator Consuelo Flores along with Tropico's co-director Marialice Jacob. The artists will be honoring their ancestors paying homage to loved ones in both traditional and contemporary interpretations transforming the gallery and giving life to this extraordinary Mexican celebration and tradition.

The Calavera Fashion Show & Walking Altars, (Nov.6) now in its eight year. The event has become one the most unique celebrations of Dia de Los Muertos anywhere. This year’s event includes19 well respected Chicano/Latino artists from Los Angeles weaving together fashion, art, music and performance in one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. As Reyes Rodriguez, artist, creator and curator of the event said "We believe that this event is the utmost Ofrenda, a couture for the deceased.”

Doors open at 7:30 PM with the Calavera Fashion Show set to start at 8:30 PM. Seats are limited and offered at $25 (advance sales starting Oct 12), with standing-general admission tickets offered at $12 (door). A cash bar & food will be available throughout the event.
