The L.A. Art Book Fair Isn’t Happening, but Community Service Is

With the untimely death of curator Shannon Michael Cane, Printed Matter's L.A. Art Book Fair is not happening in 2018. Stepping into the Void (literally, the venue's name is the Void) is Community Service, a new event that includes many of the most interesting presses, magazines and artists that would have participated in the book fair.

It all goes down this weekend. Organizers say it's a way to help emerging creatives share their work and collaborate with one another — and pick up some of the slack created with the loss of the incredibly popular (some would say too popular) book fair.

They've curated list of both established and emerging artists, galleries, publishers, and interesting creative people, and are also are presenting a group show of young artists, curated by Manon Macasaet.

That exhibition will be showcased in a rental truck parked out front of the venue. There's also an afterparty at the Ace Hotel in downtown, so you can expect a weekend full of art, books, and connections.

Here's a partial list of people who will show art, books, and assorted items at Community Service...
