LA: CARS + MUSIC ~ October 15th

11:11 AM PDT on October 14, 2017

“LA: CARS + MUSIC” is a short documentary that gives a front seat ride with some of the most influential figures shaping Los Angeles’s world-renowned car scene. Going beyond pinstripes and engines, this piece highlights the role music plays in cultivating these various sub-cultures that are breaking racial and gender barriers.
View the video above, and check out some photos from the project below.
Directed by Van Alpert with guidance from Estevan Oriol, “LA: CARS + MUSIC” was created in advance of https://la.redbullmusicacademy.com/event/ryoji-ikeda-a-for-100-cars as part of Red Bull Music Academy Festival Los Angeles.
This wild event aims to unite various auto owners and some of the greatest car sound systems that LA has to offer to create the world’s largest synth orchestra, conducted by artist Ryoji Ikeda. The whole thing sounds totally insane and must be seen in person. Check out the official description below...
As part of Red Bull Music Academy Festival Los Angeles, renowned artist Ryoji Ikeda will present a brand-new composition, in collaboration with 100 automobile owners, that constitutes the world’s largest synth orchestra. The piece, entitled A [for 100 cars] will continue Ikeda’s long-running series investigating the frequencies of note A. Before the world settled on the general tuning standard of A=440Hz, there were historically many different standards. A [for 100 cars], performed by emitting sine waves at all these diverse (yet specific) frequencies, will create an immersive soundscape. RBMA’s Tatsuya Takahashi will work with Ikeda to create a device, especially for this performance, that will help guide the composition from start to finish.

Doors will open at 3:00 PM, and attendees are encouraged to come early to enjoy the impressive installation of 100 cars, vehicles which will be hand-selected for their incredible soundsystems. The performance will begin promptly at 5:30 PM with a final seating at 5:15 PM.
