Taco News Round Up: Free Tacos, DTLA Taco Boom Continues Unabated, & More

Farley Elliot of Eater LA is always on the taco beat-- his latest story concerns a new joint in Downtown L.A. called Chica's. Hot the heels of the Sonoratown announcement, this latest opening solidifies that Downtown LA is now LA's new-school taco HQ, even if the taco in the Chica's logo seems to be mainly lettuce and tomato. From the Eater story:

The plan for Chicas Tacos is to bring even more fast casual tacos to Downtown by way of a 700 square foot space that's been outfitted top to bottom. Formerly the home of Mama's Asian Cuisine, the Olive Street address is nearing the final stages of a complete makeover that will transform the diminutive location into something much airier and more colorful. Think Tacos Tu Madre, but with a more throwback feel.

Right now, Chicas Tacos has plans to open by May 30, with a still in-progress menu that will be composed of tacos, aguas frescas, and more.

Elliot also lets us know that Trejo's Tacos will be adding two more locations.

Meanwhile, over at LA Mag, James Beard award winner and author of Tacos 101 Bill Esparza says it's time for Mariscos Chente's Vicente Cassio to get his due. The godfather of Mexican Seafood in L.A. "still has the magic touch with ceviche".

Do you like free tacos? In a special announcement for this column, we want to tell you about a fun thing happening on Cinco de Mayo. Remember when Revolutionario won Taco Madness? Good times, right? Well they are about to get better-- this Cinco de Mayo, everyone can get a free taco to help celebrate their victory! Here's the official word from owner Chef Zadi:

Here are the details direct from owner Chef Zadi:

To celebrate Revolutionario's taco madness I would like to give away one free vegetarian taco to the first 500 customers on Cinco de Mayo. Customers will have a choose one of three options.

We will also donate a percentage of our sales that day to help undocumented immigrants such as Genoveva and David Leyva.

Because we are Revolutionario North African Tacos Sin Fronteras and we want to express solidarity with undocumented Hispanic immigrants. Because 84% agricultural workers in America are Hispanic and 75% were born in Mexico.
